A trade agreement was reached between the U.S. and Canada before the midnight deadline Sunday and our North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik approves the deal.

"This is tremendous news for our North Country economy, and I applaud U.S. and Canadian negotiators for their tireless work on this important agreement", Stefanik said in a press release. The trade agreement was named the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement, or USMCA, replacing an original 24-year-old North American Free Trade Agreement.

"I have been a strong advocate for modernizing our trade agreement with Canada and Mexico in Congress, and I am pleased that this framework will open up the Canadian dairy markets for our North Country farmers who have been struggling. Canadian trade has supported millions of jobs since NAFTA took effect, and reaching this agreement is critical to the continued success of our region."

Officials from Washington, D.C. say the new agreement offers Canada protection if President Trump chooses to utilize tariff’s on auto industry imports to the U.S. President Trump criticized the original North American Free Trade Agreement, calling it a “job-killing disaster”.
