How high will gas prices go amidst upcoming spring and summer driving season? AAA weighs in

Published on February 16, 2021

Gas Prices

Prices at the pump have been climbing higher and higher as nearly 40 states across the nation have topped their average figures from last year.

“Crude, not demand, has been the main factor driving gas price increases this year,” said AAA Spokesperson, Jeanette Casselano McGee.

As winter nears spring, the summer driving season will be here before we all know it and residents are wondering how high gas prices will become as the months progress.

According to the AAA, the price of crude oil is still $10-$12/bbl lower than when the national average price of gas was last near $3/gallon in 2018.

In order for prices to be that expensive again this spring or summer, AAA believes that a major spike in demand, returning to normal peak driving season levels, and crude sustaining at very high prices will be required.

As of Tuesday, New York’s average gallon of gas hovers at $2.60.

Here locally, gas prices are right around $2.65 per-gallon; almost identical to where they were one-year-ago.
