Fatal snowmobile wreck in Martinsburg claims life of Lewis County man

MARTINSBURG- Authorities say a fatal snowmobile accident claimed the life of a Lewis County man over the weekend in the town of Martinsburg.

Emergency services were called out to the Rector Road shortly before 1:00 a.m. Saturday.

After investigating the incident, sheriff’s investigators have determined that Ladet J. Goutermount, 21, of Copenhagen, NY was traveling west on his 2019 Polaris sled.

According to police, Goutermount failed to negotiate a curve. He subsequently went off from the trail and struck a tree, police said.

Goutermount was pronounced deceased on scene, the Sheriff’s Office said.

Members of Lewis County Search & Rescue, Martinsburg Fire Department and Groff’s Towing all assisted on scene.

The Sheriff’s Office said the accident remains under investigation.
