ACS Robotics Qualifies for World Championships

Published on March 13, 2024

BOONVILLE-The Adirondack STEAM Program is brimming with excitement as it announces the remarkable achievement of its two middle school robotics teams, both of which have earned a spot in the prestigious Sphero World Championships. The Sphero Global Challenge, renowned as the pinnacle of STEAM competitions, provides students a platform to delve deep into computational thinking, engineering, and programming skills.

Over the course of the school year, a dedicated group of 11 students, divided into two teams, has poured their energy into preparing five intricate coding "missions" alongside a Google Slide presentation of their work. The teams submitted their work in mid February and their diligence bore fruit when, last week, they received the exhilarating news that their work had propelled them to the Sphero World Championship round.

This accomplishment is no small feat, considering that only 10% of the participating teams in the Sphero Global Challenge progressed to the World Championship round. This year, the competition attracted over 300 teams from 7 different countries, adding to the significance of Adirondack's achievement.

From now until the end of April, the students will collaborate with their respective teams to devise innovative solutions for the championship mission. Towards the end of April, they will present their work live over Zoom to the esteemed Sphero Championship Committee.

This marks the third consecutive year that Adirondack students have ventured into the Sphero Global Challenge, with one of the teams reaching the World Finals each year. In the inaugural year, ACS had their one entrant finish in 4th place. Last year two of the three teams advanced with one team securing 5th place, while the other clinched the top spot.

The Adirondack STEAM Program extends its heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Justin Wiedrick for his unwavering dedication and support of the robotics teams. Additionally, a special acknowledgement goes out to Superintendent Kristy McGrath, Principal Brandie Collins, Heidi Smith, Director of Curriculum and Technology Michael Faustino, and the ACS Board of Education for their steadfast backing of Adirondack STEAM. As always, ACS IS FULL STEAM AHEAD!!
