DEER RIVER - John D. Rohr, 62, of State Route 26, Deer River, died on Friday, April 25, 2014.

A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 at First Presbyterian Church, Lowville with Rev. Dr. Herb Swanson, Pastor and Rev. Jane Wagner officiating. Calling hours are Tuesday, April 29, 2014 from 4 – 7 p.m.at Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc. Burial will be in Swinburne Cemetery at the convenience of the family. He leaves behind his wife of 25 years, Phyllis; a daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Brian Payne of Freeville, NY; two step-sons and their wives, Roger and Eileen Deery of Dumfries, VA; Benjamin Deery and Faye Hubbard of Monroe, GA; his siblings, Anne Rohr of Carthage; William D. Rohr and Karen Turck of Lowville; Bruce and Kelly Rohr of Lowville; five grandchildren, Katlyn Payne, Eric Deery, Connor Deery, Joseph and Matthew Ritt; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. In addition to his parents, he is predeceased by two brothers, Mark Rohr and David Rohr.

John was born on December 20, 1951 in Carthage, NY, a son of the late Richard D. and Lela J. Zecher Rohr. He graduated from Carthage Central School in 1970, Jefferson Community College in 1972, and Oswego State University in 1974. After graduation from college, he was employed as a supervisor at the Lewis County ARC in Greig. On September 21, 1974, he married Len Ann Brown. Their marriage ended after many years. He later married Phyllis Deery on August 5, 1988 at the United Community Church in Carthage. Mr. Rohr worked as a Program Aide for the Lewis County Cooperative Extension. In 1977, he took over operation of the family dairy farm, which he operated until 2008.

Mr. Rohr was actively involved in the community. He was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Lowville, where he served as Elder, and spear-headed the Stone Soup Community Garden. He was formerly a member of the United Community Church in Carthage, where he served as Trustee and Elder. John was a member of Carthage Elks Lodge #1762, a member of the Town of Denmark Planning Board, and a member of the Swinburne Cemetery Association, Deer River. Mr. Rohr was a member of Lewis County Soil and Water Board of Directors, where he served as Secretary, and was formerly a member of the Lowville Producer’s Dairy Cooperative Board of Directors. He was a member of Carlowden Country Club. John loved animals, gardening, playing golf, and spending time with his family.
