George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of December 15th, 2008:

  • MONDAY, DECEMBER 15: Saturday morning we wished Betty Peters a happy 91st birthday from the Planck family. TV funnyman Tim Conway is 75 today. He was born in Willoughby, Ohio, and had his first TV job on the Steve Allen Show. He is best remembered for his years on the Carol Burnett Show and his seven Dorf movies. Drummer Dave Clark was born in London, England, 66 years ago. He formed a group called the Dave Clark 5 and in 1964 hit the charts with “Glad All Over.” They went on to put close to 20 songs in the top 40. A massive snow storm started today in 1991. In 24 hours, 29 inches of snow fell with 55 mph winds. I wore a snowmobile helmet while snow blowing my driveway, which had to be cleared three times. I measured 8 inches in just one hour. The storm ended the next day with a total of 37 inches of fluffy snow.

  • TUESDAY, DECEMBER 16: Happy 78th birthday wishes to Betty Pfendler of Jackson Hill, from her family. Yesterday’s temperature of 49 and 25 mph winds created a snow loss of 3 to 4 inches. The village still has 6 inches on the ground, with Highmarket measuring 13 inches on the ground. If you’ve been collecting the state quarters, the last one, Hawaii, is now out, to complete the series.

  • WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 17: I received a report of lightning and rolling thunder around 4:15 a.m. this morning in the Greig area. I didn’t observe anything this way, but occasionally it does happen when weather fronts pass each other. Yesterday the barometer peaked at 30.44 and as of 9 a.m. it has dropped to 29.87, indicating some not so nice weather is approaching. Today, we wish Adeline Youngs of the West Road a happy 77th birthday from her family and friends. By Presidential Proclamation since 1963, today is Wright Brothers Day. This commemorates Orville and Wilbur Wright’s first successful flight of a self-propelled, heavier-than-air aircraft near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, in 1903.

  • THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18: Congratulations to Josh Houppert and Ashley Gudridge of Glenfield on the birth early this morning of a son, David James. He weighed 7 pounds, 15 ounces, and 20 inches long. Best wishes from Aunt Tina, Uncle Tim, and family. Happy birthday to Rich Cihocki of West Leyden on his 69th, from his children, grandchildren, and siblings Frank, Bert, Jim and Ron. A winter storm watch was issued for tomorrow. That means significant winter weather is expected, but not imminent for the watch area, and is usually issued 12 to 36 hours in advance. The conditions could include heavy snow, heavy sleet, significant freezing rain or a combination. We should see snowfall readings of 3 to 7 inches tomorrow.

  • FRIDAY, DECEMBER 19: Happy 81st birthday to Dan Youngs of Boonville from his friends at the Boonville Elks Lodge. I missed a famous baseball player’s birthday. Yesterday, Ty Cobb was born in Narrows, Georgia in 1886. He played in more than 3,000 games in 24 years, with a batting average of .367. He died in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1961, on July 17. Country music entertainer Little Jimmy Dickens was born in Bolt, West Virginia, in 1920. He has been an active member of the Grand Ole Opry since 1948. Little Jimmy stands at only 4’-11”. He’s 3 inches shorter than I am.
