George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of December 11th, 2006:
- MONDAY, DECEMBER 11: Yesterday
afternoon in Boonville, I saw Santa riding into town on a motorcycle. He
had his red suit with white hair protruding from his helmet, and wearing
a big smile. Congratulations to Mike and Kristen Stanford of the Moose
River Road in Port Leyden on the birth of a son, Michael Kevin Jr. Best
wishes from Mom and Dad Turck. Also, congratulations to David Croniser
and Carrie Kohl of the West Road on the birth this morning of a son,
John Francis Croniser. Best wishes from Grandpa and Grandma Croniser.
Singer Brenda Lee was born 62 years ago in Atlanta, Georgia, and is
still entertaining. Her Christmas song, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas
Tree,” was recorded in 1958 and is played every Christmas. The lead
singer of the 70s’ pop group, “Bread,” David Gates, was born in Tulsa,
Oklahoma, on December 11, 1940.
- TUESDAY, DECEMBER 12: Donald
Edick of West Martinsburg celebrates his 81st birthday today, with love
from wife June, and also from Tom and Sherry and the rest of the family.
Motels can be found in almost every town in the country, but did you
know the very first, The Motel Inn, opened for business today in San
Luis Obispo, California, in 1925. Singer-actor Frank Sinatra was born in
1915 in Hoboken, New Jersey, and died in 1998. Singer Connie Francis was
born in Newark, New Jersey, 68 years ago. I’m sure you’ll remember her
first big hit song, “Who’s Sorry Now,” a top five song in 1958. Singer
Dionne Warwick observes her 66th birthday today.
- WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 13:
Congratulations to Brandon Myers and Ajia Willis on the birth of a
daughter on Monday. Kendra Kiersten will be welcomed home by Grandpa
Kent, Grandma Marsha, Devin, Randy and Kyle. A huge flock of geese flew
south over the station at 8:25 this morning. Yesterday’s high
temperature of 44 and steady rain this morning has melted all the snow
in the fields at the station. Snowmobilers in Boonville will be happy to
learn that a new trail is nearing completion from the Boonville
Fairgrounds and will reconnect to a former trail, taking much of the
traffic from the Jackson Hill trail, which will also continue to be
groomed. Car history tells that the last two-seater Thunderbird rolled
off the assembly line in 1957, replaced with a larger four-seater model.
Randy Owen, lead singer of the country group, Alabama, was born in Fort
Payne, Alabama, 57 years ago today. Country singer John Anderson, a
native of Apopko, Florida, was also born today in 1954.
- THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14: Our warm
weather continues with no amount of snow in the forecast. Looking back
in my records, 1976 had the most snow at the Jackson Hill Weather
Station with 29 inches on the ground, and on that morning I recorded 26
degrees below zero in the village. The Indianapolis Motor Speedway
completed their brick track surface in 1909. The cartoonist who gave us
Charlie Brown, Snoopy, and the Peanuts’ characters, Charles Schultz,
announced his retirement today in 1999. He drew the comic strip for 50
years, but was battling cancer. He died in 2000. Country music singer
Jimmy Dean’s hit song, “Big Bad John,” was the first country single
record to be honored with a gold record in 1961. Country singer Lorrie
Morgan made her first appearance at the Grand Ole Opry in 1973 at 13
years of age.
- FRIDAY, DECEMBER 15: Happy 33rd
anniversary wishes to Dee Tuttle of Lowville, from husband Bill and
Bouncer. The Merry Hill Weather Station temperature of 50 degrees
yesterday broke the old record of 46 degrees in 1992. Reports are coming
in of lilac bushes starting to bud out, and Dan Hall at Davidson
Chevrolet spotted a live tent caterpillar walking around the car wash
this morning. Country singer-actress Dolly Parton is donating $500,000
to a new hospital in her hometown of Sevierville, Tennessee, in honor of
Dr. Robert F. Thomas, the doctor that delivered Dolly in 1946.
