George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of December 10th, 2007:
- MONDAY, DECEMBER 10:
Congratulations to Allen Satterly and Helen Malara of Boonville on the
birth Saturday of a son, Trenton Michael, weighing 5 pounds, 3 ounces.
The proud grandparents are Paul and Ann Malara, and Dick and Joanne
Satterly of Boonville. Laurie and I were invited to a surprise birthday
party for Stuart Bourgeois to celebrate his 80th birthday, which was
last Monday. The party was held at the Boonville Elks Lodge Saturday
night. Close to a hundred well-wishers attended, and all were given
Happy Birthday shirts to wear upon his arrival. Everyone had a great
time with delicious food and fun music. He thought everyone forgot his
birthday. If you collect state quarters, the new Utah coin is now
available. Be sure to check your tire pressures now that cold
temperatures are here. I found each tire required 5 pounds of pressure
to bring them up to the correct level. Soft tires use a lot more fuel,
so better check them.
- TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11: A freezing
mist was encountered on my way to the station, but there was no
accumulation. Weather extremes this morning include a high temperature
of 50 degrees today in 1979, but a low temperature of 20 below zero was
recorded in 1977 with 23 inches of snow on the ground. On this day in
1941, spare tires in new cars were prohibited because of a shortage of
rubber during World War II. Singer Brenda Lee was a teenager in the ’50s
when she recorded the classic Christmas song, “Rockin’ Around The
Christmas Tree,” written by Johnny Marks, who also wrote “Rudolph The
Red Nosed Reindeer.” Brenda observes her 63rd birthday today. She was
inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1997. She had 55 pop
hits and 35 country music songs during her long career.
- WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 12: A
freezing rain last evening brought a coating of 1/4 inch of ice, but
melted during the night, doing little damage. This morning in 1977,
Jackson Hill dropped to 30 degrees below zero, with Old Forge reporting
minus 36. Arleigh and Irene Harley of Lyons Falls celebrate their 54th
anniversary, with best wishes from their church friends. Donald Edic of
West Martinsburg counts up 82 birthday candles today, with happy wishes
from wife June and their 10 children. Today is known as Poinsettia Day,
honoring Dr. Joel Roberts Poinsett. He was an American statesman who
introduced this South American plant to the U.S., which has become a
favorite Christmas plant. He died near Statesburg, SC, on December 12,
1851. Singer/actor Frank Sinatra was born today in Hoboken, NJ, in 1915.
After a very successful career, he died of a heart attack in Los Angeles
on May 14, 1998 at the age of 82. Singer Connie Francis was born in
Newark, NJ, 69 years ago. She had dozens of hit songs through the ’60s,
including the movie title song, “Where The Boys Are.”
- THURSDAY, DECEMBER 13:
Congratulations to Bob and Marianne O’Hara of West Leyden on the birth
yesterday of a daughter, Rilee Patricia, who came into the world at 7
pounds, 13 ounces. They have a son Rem at home. Best wishes from Poppy
and Connie. Former students and friends of William Kaskela might like to
send him a birthday card. William will be celebrating his 100th birthday
on December 18. He served as a teacher and principal at the
Constableville School from 1935 to 1963. His address is 6 Jessica Place,
Whitesboro, NY 13492. In automotive history, the last two-seater Ford
Thunderbird came off the assembly line in 1957, and was replaced with a
four-passenger model for 1958. Also, the first production line Lincoln
Continental was built today in 1939.
- FRIDAY, DECEMBER 14: Happy 50th
anniversary wishes to Jerry and Elsie Root of Lyons Falls. Also, Elsie’s
mom, Betty Peters, of the Lewis County Extended Healthcare Facility,
observes her 90th birthday, with best wishes from her four children and
from Barb O’Hara in Brantingham. A Nor’easter is forecast to arrive this
Saturday night in the North Country. On tomorrow’s date in 1991, a huge
storm unfolded, bringing snowfall in the village at a rate of 8 inches
per hour. By the next day 29 inches of snow was measured, with a snow
total of 37 inches from that storm. NASCAR was founded on this day in
Daytona, Florida, in 1947, the first formal organization for stock-car
racing.
