George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of December 8th, 2008:
- MONDAY, DECEMBER 8: A
bone-chilling morning greeted the North Country. It was minus 10 in the
village, minus 11 on Merry Hill, minus 14 in Highmarket, minus 16 on the
Rector Road, and minus 20 on the Brewery Road in Croghan. Yesterday,
longtime snowmobilers Mr. and Mrs. Franklin Persons of Hawkinsville
celebrated their 56th anniversary, with congratulations and best wishes
from a friend. Happy 85th birthday wishes to Mary Konkol of River Road
in Watson, from nephew John. Now that hunting season has ended,
snowmobiling will begin. The Kubota groomer was out all night from the
Lost Trail Snowmobile Club of Boonville and is on the trails as I write
this. The Piston Bully, with its brand-new tracks, will be out late this
afternoon. As the groomer passed through the Boonville Rod and Gun
Club’s property yesterday, it was discovered that trail signs that were
put up four days ago have already been stolen. The Snowmobile Club, this
year alone, spent $2,000 for trail signs to make riding safer.
- TUESDAY, DECEMBER 9:
Congratulations to Paul Hrim and Elizabeth Austin of Boonville on the
birth yesterday of a daughter, Brailynn Marie. She entered the world at
7 pounds, 2 ounces, and 20 inches long, with happy wishes from both
families. Actor Kirk Douglas was born in Amsterdam, NY, 91 years ago.
His real name was hard to pronounce, as he was born with the name of
Issur Danielovich Demsky. His stage name everyone remembers.
Singer-actor Donny Osmond was born in Ogden, Utah, 51 years ago.
- WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 10: Amazing
changes in temperature are occurring this morning. At 7:16 a.m. we
reached 46 degrees with rain. At 9 a.m. the reading dropped to 31 and
was expected to drop into the 20s with 2 to 3 inches of snow from a cold
front entering the North Country. We send happy 77th birthday wishes to
Elma Freeman of the Spencer Road, Boonville, from husband Bob,
grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great grandson. Happy birthday
to Cliff Cook at the Lewis County Humane Society, from wife Ingrid and
family.
- THURSDAY, DECEMBER 11: Happy 32nd
anniversary wishes to Lyndon and Cindy Mooney of Lyons Falls, from Josh,
Holly, Judy, Dave and Dillon. Friends of Judy Hulbert called to wish the
oldest Birnie Bus driver in Lowville special birthday greetings to the
“Queen of the Over the Hill Gang.” Alaska’s first TV station, KTVA,
signed on today in Anchorage in 1953. World War II era motorists may
remember today in 1941. Because of a rubber shortage, new cars and
trucks were prohibited from having spare tires. David Gates, lead singer
of the late ’60s group, “Bread,” was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, 68 years
ago. The original singer of “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” Brenda
Lee, a native of Atlanta, Georgia, can light up 64 candles on her
birthday cake.
- FRIDAY, DECEMBER 12: Happy 44th
anniversary wishes to Tom and Marie McCoy of Rome, from daughters Deb,
Irene, and granddaughter Kyra. Donald Edic of West Martinsburg will
celebrate his 83rd birthday, with happy wishes from wife June and
family. Three well-known singers were born on this day. Frank Sinatra in
Hoboken, NJ, in 1915, Connie Francis in Newark, NJ, in 1938, and Dionne
Warwick in East Orange, NJ, 68 years ago. New Jersey should celebrate
this day. Game show host Bob Barker was born in Darrington, Washington,
85 years ago.
