George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of December 1st, 2008:
- MONDAY, DECEMBER 1: North Country
weather sure can change abruptly. Saturday brought sunny skies and 31
degrees. Sunday afternoon brought light snow, which changed over to
rain. The village rain gauge this morning collected 1.2 inches with
10-1/2 inches of snow still on the ground with a high temperature of 38
degrees at 4:26 a.m., and temperatures are expected to rise in the mid
40s today. The game of Bingo was started today in 1929. The innovator
was Edwin S. Lowe, and it has become a money maker for many charitable
organizations. Singer-actress Bette Midler was born in Honolulu, Hawaii,
63 years ago.
- TUESDAY, DECEMBER 2: Happy
anniversary to Highmarket residents Donny and Kay Seelman on their 58th
today, from family and friends. Terry and Cindy Planck of Boonville
observe their 30th anniversary today, with happy wishes from mom and the
family. Laura Cavanaugh of Constableville will have to blow out 75
birthday candles today. Best wishes from her grandchildren and
four-great-grandchildren. In 2003, a moose was spotted on the West
Leyden end of the Mohawk Hill by snowplow drivers. It’s rare to see one
at this time of year. In 1989, a cold front came through dropping our
temperature to minus 12 degrees, and a warm front in 1998 raised the
high temperature to 56 degrees.
- WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 3:
Boonville’s coldest temperature for this day was 26 below zero in 1976
and the highest reading was 54 degrees in 1982. It wouldn’t be a normal
holiday season without the music of Andy Williams. Andy was born in Wall
Lake, Iowa, 81 years ago. he still performs his Christmas show at his
Moon River Theatre in Branson, Missouri, to capacity crowds, and this
will be his 16th year at his theatre. The last American Motor Company (AMC)
Pacer was provided in 1979. The bubble-topped car was driven by Garth in
the movie, “Wayne’s World.” The first human heart transplant was
performed by surgeon Christian Bernard in Cape Town, South Africa, in
1967.
- THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4: A very
happy 91st birthday to Mae Hill of Lowville, with love from her family.
Snowmobiling has a very strong interest in Boonville. Last night, 26
members attended the Lost Trail Club’s monthly meeting, the largest
turnout in years. The Club is sponsoring a Snowmobile Safety Course on
Saturday with a 50-person maximum. As of last night, 38 had already
signed up. The season’s snowfall is surpassing many previous years. The
total at the Merry Hill Weather Station in Boonville as of today is 54.5
inches. Last year’s total at this time was 21.7 inches and two years
ago, it was 30.5 inches. At this rate, it could be a long winter. I
found it interesting that country superstar George Strait eloped in
Mexico in 1971 and, to keep their parents happy, seven months later he
re-married Norma Voss in Texas on this day.
- FRIDAY, DECEMBER 5: Another
lake-effect snow warning was issued for today with the possibility of
7-plus inches for this area. I learned from a listener by e-mail that
skunks do not go into true hibernation. They sometimes will wake up
during warmer temperatures, and may search for food around bird feeders
and sometimes garbage bags. I saw a pure white one crawling through the
snow several years ago behind the Radio Station when I was taking the
snow measurements. In 1978, Charlie Daniels Band recorded the classic
hit song, “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” in Nashville. By the summer
of 1979, the song went to number one, sold over a million copies, and
became Charlie Daniels’ most recognized song. in 1977, Plymouth
introduced a new front-wheel drive car called the Horizon. Also today in
1932, Ford introduced their first V-8 engine cast in a single piece.
