following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of November 27th, 2006:
- MONDAY, NOVEMBER 27: Seven days
with no precip has been enjoyable. Can’t remember the last time we went
this long. It gave everyone the chance to put up their Christmas
decorations outside. The temperature rose to 53 degrees in the village.
Today, Jane Flansburg reaches her 90th birthday at Sunset, with best
wishes from her family. November 26, 1922, was the birth date of Charles
M. Schulz, cartoonist and creator of the “Peanuts” comic strip. He was
born in St. Paul, Minnesota, retiring in 1999 and died in 2000. On
yesterday’s date in 1927, Ford Motor Company introduced the Model A car,
selling for $460. Nearly 5 million vehicles were produced before ending
production in 1932. “Howdy Doody’s” creator, Buffalo Bob Smith was born
today in Buffalo, NY, in 1917. The puppeteer died at age 80 in
Hendersonville, North Carolina, on July 30, 1998. The late country music
singer, Eddie Rabbitt, was born today in Brooklyn, NY, in 1941 and died
of leukemia on May 7, 1998, after charting over 40 hit songs, 17 of
which were number one.
- TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 28: Two young
ladies celebrate impressive birthday numbers today. Clara Bartelotte of
Lyons Falls is 92 with best wishes from her family. I received a card
from Beaver Falls wishing Pearl Hayes a happy 90th birthday today from
all her family. Upon checking our flower beds at home, it was discovered
that skunks have been digging up our flower bulbs. To end the “problem,”
a box of moth balls was purchased and spread around the disrupted area.
Since that time, nothing has been touched. It worked the last time we
had that problem. Country music legend Willie Nelson appeared as a
member of the Grand Ole Opry in 1964. Motown record producer Berry Gordy
Jr. was born today in Detroit, Michigan, in 1929.
- WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 29: Ruth
Mangan of Port Leyden celebrates her 93rd birthday today, and her family
sends their love. Happy 82nd birthday to Pearl Dolan of Indian River,
from her family and friends. Chib and Dorothy Monnat, also of Indian
River, celebrate their 48th anniversary, with best wishes from the
Sweeneys. Musician Chuck Mangione was born in Rochester, NY, 66 years
ago today. Country music singer Johnny Horton received a Grammy in 1959
for his huge hit song, “The Battle of New Orleans.
- THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 30: In
automotive history, the first “Scout” all-terrain vehicle was produced
in Fort Wayne, Indiana, by International Harvester in 1960, and was
built for 10 years before being updated in 1971. I’m not sure when the
vehicle ended production. He was best known for his hit song, “Tiptoe
Through the Tulips,” in the summer of 1968. Tiny Tim died on this day
in1996 of congestive heart failure at the age of 71. The one-time actor
of the TV series, “77 Sunset Strip,” in the ’50s, Efrem Zimbalist Jr., a
New York City native, is 89 today. Dick Clark, longtime host of
“American Bandstand,” celebrates his 77th birthday. The Mount Vernon
native worked at WKTV in Utica early in his career. County music singer
Mindy McCready was born in Fort Myers, FL, 31 years ago.
- FRIDAY, DECEMBER 1: The Merry
Hill Weather Station set a new high temperature yesterday of 58 degrees,
replacing the record of 57 degrees in 1998. Today is the first
anniversary of Merry Hill being able to provide official temperatures of
Boonville. Congratulations Edie. The first Christmas club accounts were
offered today in 1909 from the Pennsylvania Trust Company of Carlisle,
PA. Two of Buck Owens’ best remembered country songs, I’ve Got a Tiger
By the Tail” and “Cryin’ Time,” were recorded on this day in 1965. On
December 2, 2003, snowplow drivers on Mohawk Hill near Constableville
spotted a moose in a field. Early rock and roll singer Buddy Holly made
his first of two appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show tonight in 1957,
and sang “That’ll Be The Day” and “Peggy Sue” on the second show. He was
killed in a plane crash on February 3, 1959.
