George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of November 26th, 2007:
- MONDAY, NOVEMBER 26: Saturday
morning I had a call to congratulate Dave and Sarah Liddle of Barksdale
Air Force Base in Louisiana on the birth Friday morning of a daughter,
Adia. Proud grandparents are Dale and Debbie Liddle of Forestport.
Yesterday’s sunny skies brought a high temperature of 43 degrees. Into
storage went the Thanksgiving decorations, and out came the holiday and
Christmas display items. The cartoonist who gave the world “Peanuts” and
“Good Ol’ Charlie Brown,” Charles Schulz, was born in St. Paul, MN, in
1922. He retired in 1999 and died of cancer one year later. There was a
large turnout in downtown Boonville Friday evening, as a parade and
Santa’s arrival delighted all the children and parents. Today would have
been singer-actor Robert Goulet’s birthday. He was born in Lawrence, MA,
in 1933 and died on October 30 of this year.
- TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 27: Happy 91st
birthday wishes to Jane Flansburg, a resident of Sunset Nursing Home,
from all her sisters and families. If you remember “Howdy Doody” in the
1950s, you’d remember Buffalo Bob. He was born Robert Schmidt in 1917 in
Buffalo, NY. He changed his name to Bob Smith and later to Buffalo Bob
Smith. He died in Hendersonville, NC, at the age of 80 in 1998.
- WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 28: Happy
37th anniversary wishes to George and Effie Poore of Lyons Falls from
their family and friends. Here at the radio station, our tower collapsed
under the weight of 3/4 inches of ice at 7:05 a.m. in 1958. It was
replaced with a much stronger built tower, which is still in use. The
latest state quarter is out. You can add Wyoming to your collection. The
last of my garden vegetables were pulled out of the ground yesterday. I
now have a good fresh supply of five different varieties of carrots,
including the yellow ones.
- THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 29:
Congratulations to Brandy and Brian LaParr of Watson on the birth of a
son, Cooper Frederick, who joins three brothers at home. Best wishes
from all the grandparents and friends. Happy birthday wishes go out to
Ruth Mangan of Port Leyden on her 94th birthday, from her family and
friends. Chib and Dorothy Monnat of Indian River celebrate their 49th
anniversary, with best wishes from the Monnat and Sweeney families. Also
from Indian River, Pearl Dolan celebrates her birthday with 83rd candles
on her cake, with best wishes from Ron and Marge. In country music
history, Johnny Horton’s song, “The Battle of New Orleans,” earned a
“Grammy” in 1959 for the best country and western performance and song
of the year honors. Don’t forget to start filling your bird feeders if
you haven’t already, as the ground is now partially covered with snow.
I’m putting on my snow tires today, as the forecast has a lake-effect
snow warning tonight and tomorrow.
- FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30: Lake-effect
snow only accumulated 2 to 3 inches in most areas last night. In 1980,
11 inches of new snow was measured on Jackson Hill at the weather
station, which brought the snow level on the ground to 15 inches. One
year ago today, the temperature went up to 58 degrees, with the lowest
reading of 7 degrees in 1995. America’s oldest teenager, Dick Clark, was
born in Mount Vernon, NY, 78 years ago. He was the originator of the
American Bandstand, originating from Philadelphia in the earlier days.
International Harvester produced their first Scout all-terrain vehicle
at their Fort Wayne, Indiana, plant in 1960.
