George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of November 24th, 2008:
- MONDAY, NOVEMBER 24: It looks
like this cold snap will finally ease up today, with temperatures near
40 today. Yesterday morning’s low was minus 3 here at the Station, with
minus 8 recorded in Highmarket. There’s still 7-1/2 inches of snow on
the ground in the Village and 9 inches here at the Station. Boonville’s
snowfall total as of today is 26.4 inches. The wildlife has been active
this morning, with two does and two turkeys in the field across from the
Radio Station. Happy birthday to Betty Hall of Point Rock who celebrates
her 82nd birthday, with happy wishes from Rich, Elaine and family, and
her camping buddies. John and Audrey Gilbert, summer residents of
Boonville, reported from Florida Saturday morning that the first robins
have arrived there. They must be tuckered out by the time they arrived!
A big thank you to Leon and Wanda Bowen of the Stuckie Road for
supplying the big wreath to the Radio Station. Decca Records released
the Christmas classic song, “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” by
14-year-old Brenda Lee in 1958. The song has been enjoyed every year
since.
- TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 25: Another
heavy snowfall arrived overnight across our region. Heavy wet snow
accumulated 10 inches in West Leyden, with 8 inches here at the Station.
There were no school delays this morning. Today, Warren and Sandy
Ebersol of Castorland celebrate their 47th anniversary, with best wishes
from their family. Happy 36th anniversary wishes to Eric Clemons from
wife Patti. They live in the New Bremen-Beaver Falls area. Ricardo
Montalban, the star of TV’s “Fantasy Island,” was born in Mexico City,
Mexico, 88 years ago. Baseball great Joe DiMaggio was born in San
Francisco in 1914. He played his entire career with the New York Yankees
from 1936 to 1951, and was the only player in baseball history to be
selected for the All-Star game in every season he played. He retired at
36 years old and died on March 8, 1999.
- WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 26: Happy
birthday tomorrow to Jane Flansburg, a resident of Sunset Nursing Home,
on her 92nd, from her family and friends. For the third time this week,
a lake-effect snow warning was issued for Lewis, Jefferson and Oswego
counties. Forecasters speculate that 3 to 5 inches will arrive today, 3
to 6 inches tonight, and 4 to 7 inches on Thanksgiving. The Boonville
area should see much less.
- THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 27:
THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY!
- FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 28: Fresh new
snow greeted Thanksgiving morning travelers. Highmarket measured 9.4
inches and Merry Hill in Boonville picked up 6.2 inches with about 3
inches in the Village. There were numerous power outages in the northern
counties. Happy 38th anniversary wishes to George and Effie Poore, from
Scott, Tina and Angel. Our family enjoyed the company of three college
students, two from Japan and one from Vietnam, for Thanksgiving dinner.
Our daughter-in-law, Susan of Newport, NY, who teaches at Herkimer
County Community College, invited them to a North Country feast. We
enjoyed them, and they enjoyed both meals, the first at noon at my
sister’s home, then again at 5 p.m. at our house. This morning is the
anniversary of our AM tower collapsing in 1959. An ice storm coated
everything with 3/4-inch of ice and the original tower came crashing
down at 7:05 a.m. Luckily, it missed our studios. A much stronger tower
replaced the destroyed one.
