George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of November 19th, 2007:
- MONDAY, NOVEMBER 19: The weekend
was busy for me, starting Saturday morning helping the Boonville VFW in
the district judging of the Voice of Democracy competition. Our 40th
anniversary was Sunday, but we celebrated Saturday night by going to
dinner at the Towpath Inn in Turin, where we had an excellent meal,
thanks to Mary Failing and crew. On Sunday afternoon, the Boonville Elks
“end of the season NASCAR party” was held offering great food and a lot
of good fun. Today, Paul and Jean Woolschlager of Boonville celebrate
their 58th anniversary, with best wishes from Bev, Mike, and family.
Happy 85th birthday wishes to mother-in-law Phyllis Sasenbury, from
Florence. On Saturday morning, I found snowflakes the size of quarters
in the air around 5:30 a.m., but accumulations only amounted to 1-1/2
inches. At 8 a.m., a trailer with four snowmobiles went by the station.
They should know that trails open the day after hunting season ends, as
a courtesy to the hunters.
- TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 20:
Congratulations to Jason and Mandy Davis of Constableville on the birth
this morning of a son, who weighed in at 8 pounds, 15 ounces, and was 20
inches long. He joins a big brother Jacob at home. Proud grandparents
are Bill and Lynn Kelly and Dave and Chris Davis. Happy anniversary
wishes are extended to Jim and Rosie Dolan of Boonville on their 53rd,
with best wishes from John, Mary, and Father Don Karlen. Shirley Blair,
formerly of Boonville, celebrates her 83rd birthday at Valleyview Court
in Lowville. Happy wishes are from Bob, Becky, and family. In 1990,
Layne Hall of Silver Creek, NY, died. At the time, he was the nation’s
oldest driver, either 105 or 110 years old. His driver’s license
reported him to be 110. If you are a Presidential Gold Dollar collector,
the new James Madison coin is now available and is the fourth in the
series. I watched a beautiful ring-neck pheasant walk up the radio
station driveway this morning.
- WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 21:
Congratulations to Charlie and Marion Brown of Jackson Hill on their
48th anniversary, from their children and grandchildren. Tomorrow, Cel
Fuller of Petries Corners celebrates her 82nd birthday, with happy
wishes from Terry, Sharon and Patch. Yesterday, Tom Stocklosa and crew
started to put up Santa’s reindeer pen in the Boonville Little Village
Park, with the reindeer arriving this morning. Also, the Boonville
Municipal Commission electric department has been stringing up the
holiday lights on Main Street and in the Little Village Park. On this
evening in 1980, an estimated 350 million people turned into the TV
series “Dallas,” to find out who did shoot J.R. Ewing. Kristin Shepard
was identified as the culprit. “Dallas” went on the air in 1978 and ran
for 12 seasons, with the last episode airing on May 3, 1991. Ford
introduced the rarest of Ford Mustangs, the Boss 351, at the Detroit
Auto Show in 1970. This muscle car was produced only one year and only
1,806 were built, which makes them very collectible today.
- THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 22:
Thanksgiving holiday.
- FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 23: The North
Country escaped being hit with snow on Thanksgiving Day, but a light
coating of ice was found on our cars. At our house, 23 people were
served a Thanksgiving dinner. Congratulations to Michael and Dina Gerace
of Boonville on the birth of a son, Sebastian James, born Wednesday. He
weighed 9 pounds and was 21-1/2 inches long, with congratulations from
both families. Happy 44th anniversary wishes to Lyle and Karen Covey of
Carthage, from their families. The first snowmobile patent was issued to
Carl Eliason of Sayner, Wisconsin, on November 22, 1927. It was powered
by a 2.5 horsepower Johnson Outboard Engine, with slide rail track
guides and wooden skis.
