George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of November 17th, 2008:

  • MONDAY, NOVEMBER 17: Wow! Lake-effect snow from yesterday afternoon until this morning brought some impressive totals. 30 inches was measured on the Smith Road in Constableville, 26 inches on the Spencer Road above the Radio Station, 18 inches here at the Station, and 15 inches in the village. I had to snow blow my home driveway at 4:15 a.m. to be able to get to work, then buried my truck in the snow bank in front of the Station. Happy 47th anniversary wishes to Bob and Marge Schaller of Rome from their friends in the North Country.

  • TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 18: Happy 41st anniversary to my wife Laurie. Also happy wishes from sons Dan and Susan and Chris and Rene´. The day before our wedding, a storm similar to yesterday’s arrived and stopped in time for our big day. This morning’s snow levels at the Merry Hill Weather Station show 13 inches on the ground, with Highmarket measuring 21 inches. Seven out of the last 10 years had no snow on the ground on this date. In car history, Chrysler Corporation announced it was discontinuing the DeSoto cars in 1960, only two weeks after the 1961 model line was introduced, because of poor sales. Walt Disney’s Mickey Mouse was featured in the first animated cartoon talking movie, “Steamboat Willie,” in 1928. This makes Mickey 80 years old today. The late singer, Conway Twitty, recorded his huge hit song, “Hello Darlin’” in 1969 at Bradley’s Barn in Mt. Juliet, TN. The song reached #1 and remained there for four weeks.

  • WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 19: The North Country’s lake-effect snow have made the national news in many publications. On Tuesday’s edition of USA Today, the New York Times and a newspaper in St. Louis, Missouri, all had mentions of our big snowfall. Happy anniversary wishes are extended to Paul and Jean Woolschlager of Boonville on their 59th, from Mike, Bev, and family. We received a card to wish mother-in-law Phyllis Sasenbury a happy 86th birthday, with love from Florence. Famous birthdays today include actor Alan Young who starred in the 50’s TV show, “Mr. Ed” with the talking horse, was born 84 years ago. Fashion designer Calvin Klein was born in New York, NY, 66 years ago.

  • THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 20: Jim and Rosie Dolan of Boonville reached their 59th anniversary today, with best wishes from John and Mary in Blossvale, and from Father Donald Karlen. The Merry Hill Weather Station dropped to 8 degrees above zero this morning. The last time that temperature was reached was in 1986. Highmarket dropped to zero this morning and still has 15 inches of snow on the ground. The man who penned the comic strip, “Dick Tracy,” Chester Gould, was born in Pawnee, OK, in 1900. He retired in 1977 and died in Woodstock, Illinois, in 1985. NYS snowmobilers are reminded to have their sleds registered before the end of November. The state trail fund money to the clubs is predicated by the yearly registrations ending this month. The more registration money collected, will be distributed to clubs for better trails for all of us.

  • FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 21: Charlie and Marion Brown of Boonville celebrate their 49th anniversary, with congratulations from their family and friends. Another frosty morning greeted us with a low temperature at 3 degrees above at 7:06 a.m. this morning and there is still 10-1/2 inches of snow on the ground. The most snow on the ground on this day was 16-1/2 inches at the Weather Station in 1995. Nine years ago we enjoyed 59 degrees this afternoon. It was tonight on the CBS TV series “Dallas” in 1980, we found out if Kristin Shephard shot J.R. Ewing. She did and 350 million people around the world tuned in to find out. Ford Motor Company introduced the Mustang Boss 351 at the Detroit Auto Show in 1970. The car was built for only one year, producing 1,806 cars and is the rarest of the Mustangs.
