George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of November 10th, 2008:
- MONDAY, NOVEMBER 10: Two couples
celebrate their 46th anniversaries today. Bob and Irma Matuszczak of
Port Leyden and Gordon and Shirley Martin of Castorland can celebrate
today, with happy wishes from their families and friends. The National
Weather Service in Buffalo issued a Winter Storm Warning for Oswego,
Jefferson and Lewis County from 4:50 a.m. to 10:50 a.m. this morning.
Steady snow from Lake Ontario has been falling in these areas, and here
in Boonville blue skies and sunshine has greeted us. In 1975, the SS
Edmund Fitzgerald sank in a fierce storm on Lake Superior. Winds up to
60 mph and 15-foot waves led to the disaster. The ship was carrying
26,116 tons of iron-ore pellets and sank in 530 feet of water with all
29 crew members lost. Saturday I had a call to send out congratulations
to Tim and Lace Hirschey of Lowville on the birth Friday morning of a
daughter, Gracie Mae. She will join a brother Dawson and a sister Paige
at home. In 2005 a storm with heavy rain and lightning entered the area.
A bolt of lightning struck the steeple of St. Patrick’s Church in
Highmarket doing considerable damage. Today is considered the birth date
of the U.S. Marine Corps formed in 1775.
- TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 11: Snow
arrived from Lake Ontario yesterday and last night. The most snow
reported was 8 inches up on the Rector Road out of Martinsburg, and only
8/10th of an inch at Boonville’s Merry Hill Weather Station. I measured
2-1/2 inches in the village. Folklore indicates that today is St.
Martin’s Day, and if the day is dry and cold, the winter will not be
long lasting. The patriotic song written by Irving Berlin, “God Bless
America,” was first performed by Kate Smith on her radio show in 1938
and quickly became one of the most requested songs. Comedian-actor
Jonathan Winters was born in Dayton, Ohio, 83 years ago today.
- WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 12: In 1946,
the Ex-change National Bank of Chicago, Illinois, opened the first
drive-in banking service. The Recording Industry of America reports the
sales of long-playing 33 1/3 rpm albums has increased 36.6 percent in
2007. The most popular albums include classic rock, blues, and others.
You will find albums listed as available form several catalogs, but
they’re quite pricey. The Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio, reports
that William “Pudge” Heffelfinger became the first professional football
player when he was paid $25 for expenses and a $500 cash bonus from the
Allegheny Athletic Association. Singer-songwriter Neil Young was born in
Toronto, Ontario, Canada, 63 years ago. His biggest hit record was a
number one, million seller, Heart of Gold in 1972. At various times he
was a member of Buffalo Springfield and Crosby, Stilts, Nash and Young.
- THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 13: If you
drive a Jeep, you might like to know that the first Willys-Overland Jeep
prototype was finished and delivered to the U.S. Army in 1940. The Army
had asked manufacturers to design a simple and versatile military
vehicle. The design was eventually accepted and was used successfully in
WW II. Some say the word Jeep came from the initials G.P., meaning
general purpose vehicle. Author Robert Louis Stevenson was born in
Edinburgh, Scotland in 1850. I read his first successful novel,
“Treasure Island,” while in high school. He died at the young age of 44
on December 3, 1894.
- FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14: We send
happy 50th anniversary wishes to Earl and Marie Lashbrooks of Croghan,
from their children and grandchildren. Joe and Alice Maciejko of
Constableville reach their 29th anniversary, with congratulations from
family and friends. On this day in 1914, the Dodge brothers, John and
Horace, completed their first Dodge vehicle nicknamed “Old Betsy.” On
November 15, 1977, Ford Motor Company built their 100,000,00 U.S. built
Ford, a 1978 Ford Fairmont four-door sedan at their Mohwah plant in New
York. That model was discontinued at the end of the 1983 production
period.
