George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of November 6th, 2006:

  • MONDAY, NOVEMBER 6: Congratulations to David and Irene Rudd of Talcottville on the birth Saturday of a daughter, Kyra Raine, with best wishes from family and friends. He was known as “King of the Cowboys,” Roy Rogers was born on yesterday’s date in Cincinnati, Ohio, in 1912, and died on July 6, 1988, at the age of 86.

  • TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 7: A happy 93rd birthday today to Mabel Moser of Route 812 in Lowville, from her family in six states. Mary Hartness of Whitton Place in Port Leyden celebrates her 90th birthday today, from her family and friends. The Republican Party was symbolized as an elephant in a cartoon that Thomas Nast drew in 1874 and was featured in Harper’s Weekly. Evangelist Billy Graham was born in Charlotte, North Carolina, 88 years ago.

  • WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 8: Bert and Mary Kraeger of Highmarket celebrate their 48th anniversary, with best wishes from their family and friends. Dean Marcy of Boonville has an 89th birthday today, with love from wife Eileen. The next time you have an x-ray at the doctor’s office, you can thank physicist Wilhelm Roentgen of Germany, who discovered x-rays on this day in 1895. “Entertainment Tonight” TV host, Mary Hart, a native of Madison, ND, is 56 today. CBS newsman Morley Safer was born in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, 75 years ago today. In 2004, on tonight’s date, the Northern Lights were visible in the sky.

  • THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 9: Bernie and Lorene Lallier of Boonville celebrate their 49th anniversary today. Bernie said it snowed hard the day they were married. Mary Travers, part of the folk trio, Peter, Paul and Mary, was born in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1936. The trio will be at the Stanley Theater in Utica on November 18 and I have tickets to the show. Dave Walsh and Carol Tiffany, both employees at the Croghan Post Office, celebrate their birthdays, with best wishes from their co-workers. At 6:15 p.m. this evening in 1965, the biggest power failure in U.S. history began affecting seven states and parts of Canada. A 230 kilowatt transmission line near Ontario, Canada, tripped, starting a domino effect of power failures. By morning, power was restored. It was August 14, 2003, when another black-out affected the Eastern United States and Eastern Canada.

  • FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 10: A happy 90th birthday today to Robert Sunderhaft of Lowville, from an old friend. Gordon and Shirley Martin of Castorland celebrate their 44th anniversary, with best wishes from Lois and Bob Gregory of Boonville. Congratulations to three high school senior football players selected to play in the All-Star competition in Cicero. The three were on the winning Eastern Team that defeated the Western New York players, 32-26. Honored were Tom Shaw from Lowville Academy, Jake Ferguson of Beaver River, and Drew Skiff of South Lewis, who also received MVP (most valuable player) honors. Happy birthday to the U.S. Marine Corps on their 231st year. It was during a massive storm on Lake Superior in 1975 when the SS Edmund Fitzgerald, an ore carrying freighter, sank with a loss of 29 crew members. The 729-foot freighter was the fastest and largest ship on the Great Lakes and was found 530 feet underwater. The ship’s bell was recovered on July 4, 1995, and is now at the Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum at Whitefish Point in Michigan. The songwriter who gave the world two of the best recognized Christmas songs, Johnny Marks, was born in Mount Vernon, NY, in 1909. He wrote “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” as recorded by Gene Autry, and “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” made famous by Brenda Lee. One year ago, a lightning storm went through the area and the steeple on St. Patrick’s Church in Highmarket was struck, damaging the structure. Repairs were made this past summer. Rainfall from that storm measured 2.20 inches, with winds up to 64 mph on the Rector Road, just miles away.
