George's
Tid Bits | How Green is My
Garden
George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of November 5th, 2007:
- MONDAY, NOVEMBER 5: Yesterday,
Lester and Vera Swartout of Boonville observed their 60th wedding
anniversary and it was also Vera’s birthday, with congratulations from
their family. The weekend weather was good to us, allowing last minute
garden and flower bed clean-up before snow. My compost bins are now
full. By now, all window screens have been removed. It’s amazing how
much extra light now brightens up our homes. I thought I had changed all
the clocks and timers in our house, as we observe Standard Time, and
discovered I forgot the electronic thermostat for the furnace. Singer
Johnny Horton, best remembered for his huge hit, “The Battle of New
Orleans,” was killed in an automobile accident in Milo, Texas, in 1960.
In 1991, a snowstorm dumped 14 inches of snow on Barnes Corners,
bringing their snow level to close to 20 inches.
- TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 6: Last night a
heavy rain brought a measurement of .95 inches in the village to help
raise the water tables. More soaking rains are needed before the ground
freezes. I noticed the Garrison Flag in the Little Village Park has a
tear in one corner and will have to be repaired. Worldwide, today is
Saxophone Day, in honor of Belgian Adolphe Sax who invented the
saxophone and the saxotromba. He was born on this day in 1814 and died
on February 7, 1894 in Paris, France. He is best remembered for his
stirring marches, John Philip Sousa, was born in Washington, DC, in 1854
and died in Reading, PA, in 1932. Oscar winning actress Sally Field was
born in Pasadena, California, 61 years ago. Happy 93rd birthday to Ray
Anken of Boonville, from all his Boonville friends.
- WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 7: Yesterday
morning around 11 a.m., nickel-sized snowflakes arrived in the village
and continued to fall for 20 minutes. The Merry Hill Weather Station
measured 2-1/2 inches of snow with 3 inches in Highmarket and the Rector
Road. Congratulations to Jason and Constance Klossner of Constableville
on the birth last evening of a daughter, “Kylie Tasha,” with best wishes
from the new grandmas and grandpas. Happy 91st birthday wishes to Mary
Hartness of Port Leyden, from her family and friends. Hee Haw comedian
Archie Campbell was born in Bulls Gap, TN, in 1914. He died of heart
failure on August 29, 1987. Country singer Clay Walker announced
yesterday that his foundation, (Bands Against Multiple Sclerosis), is
donating $25,000 for research toward finding a cure for the disease. He
was diagnosed with MS in 1996.
- THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 8: Happy 49th
anniversary wishes to Albert and Mary Kraeger of Constableville from
Jerry, Kate, Mike and Sara. Dean Marcy of Boonville celebrates his 90th
birthday today, with love from wife Eileen. Stewart Dunn from the
Boonville Transfer Site reported 14 bluebirds arrived from the north
this morning. They should have left months ago for the south lands. In
1996, the National Weather Service issued a tornado watch for today,
with heavy rain falling by tomorrow morning. A total of 4.20 inches of
rain was measured in the village, but there was no tornado. In 2003,
everyone was waiting for a lunar eclipse to arrive at 8 p.m., and it was
very bright. On last night’s date in 2004, the Northern Lights put on a
colorful show.
- FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 9: Today marks
the anniversary of the Great Northeast Blackout that started at 5:16
p.m. in 1965 near Ontario, Canada. Altogether, 30 million people in
eight states and Canada were affected. Power was restored by morning in
the Northeast. Another major blackout occurred on August 14, 2003,
affecting the U.S. and Canada. Mary Travers of the “Peter, Paul and
Mary” folk group, was born in Louisville, Kentucky, 71 years ago. I saw
the trio in concert at the Stanley Theater in Utica last fall. She had a
knee replacement and sang with a cane, but sounded as good as always.
TV’s “Incredible Hulk,” Lou Ferrigno, was born in Brooklyn, NY, in 1951.
At the age of 21, he won the Mr. Universe title and in 1977, he first
appeared on the TV show that ran for several seasons. In 2005, St.
Patrick’s Church steeple in Highmarket was struck by lightning during a
storm in the area. The steeple and the interior were damaged, but were
repaired the next spring.
