George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of October 30th, 2006:

  • MONDAY, OCTOBER 30: Happy 52nd anniversary to Yogi and Winnie (Verle and Winola) Yelton of Boonville, from family and friends. It was a wet windy weekend with so many trees and wires down that Inlet couldn’t open school this morning. A peak wind of 60 mph was measured on the Rector Road out of Martinsburg at 5:40 p.m. last evening. I recorded 31 mph in the village at 8:27 p.m., and here at the station, 36 mph at 6:43 p.m. Highmarket received 8.6 inches of snow yesterday with 10-inches on the ground this morning. The Merry Hill Weather Station accumulated 2 inches of rain and melted snow in their rain gauge from Saturday to Monday morning. Actor-producer Henry Winkler, best remembered as the “Fonz” from the TV show “Happy Days,” was born in New York, NY, 61 years ago. Singer Roy Orbison was presented with a gold record for sales over 1 million copies of “Pretty Woman” in 1964.

  • TUESDAY, OCTOBER 31: Congratulations to Bobby Joe and Janice Crofoot of the East Ava Road on the birth yesterday of a daughter, who joins a son at home, with best wishes from family and friends. Happy 42nd anniversary wishes to Paul and Pat Jerry of Watson, from son Tracy, Jennifer and family. Former CBS newsman Dan Rather, a native of Wharton, Texas, is 75 today. TV personality Jane Pauley is 56, born in Indianapolis, IN.

  • WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 1: The weather was safe enough for a good turn-out of trick-or-treaters last evening, and no one reported any problems. Ford Motor Company started production today in 1927 of a new car, named the Model A. The car cost $400 and nearly 5,000,000 were built before production ended in early 1932. He appeared four times at the Boonville Fair, in 1989, 1991, 1993, and 1995. Whispering Bill Anderson’s birthday is today. He was born in Columbia, SC, 69 years ago.

  • THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 2: Bill and Rosie Irvin of Boonville celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary today. Rosie gives much of her time to Matthew’s Place in downtown Boonville. Good luck to the Adirondack varsity swim team, as they leave this morning for Nottingham High School to take part in sectional competition the next three days. Last evening, the senior girls’ soccer players from a dozen schools met in Herkimer and formed four different teams. Adirondack seniors Amanda Myers and Chrissy Clara were on the undefeated team. Congratulations! American frontiersman Daniel Boone was born near Reading, PA, in 1734. He died in Missouri on September 26, 1820. The ’60s pop group, Jay and the Americans’ lead singer, Jay Black, is 68 today and is still performing today. Happy belated anniversary last Sunday to Edward and Tess Ingersoll of Martinsburg, who counted up 67 years, with best wishes from the Singing Waters Senior Citizens.

  • FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 3: The first snow-covered ground in the village was found this morning with 3.2 inches measured, and the highest amount of 11 inches was measured in Lee Center. Geese are still flying south, being assisted by a north wind. A couple of weather terms should be explained, as we live in a lake-effect snow band area. A lake-effect snow advisory means snow bands will develop, but less than 7 inches of snow is expected in the next 12 hours. A lake-effect watch indicates the potential for more than 7 inches in 12 hours, but both will impact travel, as these bands are sometimes very narrow, but often produce more than an inch of snow per hour, with as much as 3 to 4 inches per hour. Walt Disney produced introduced, “Mickey Mouse” in a movie short called “Steamboat Willie,” in 1928. The movie, “The Wizard of Oz,” was presented on CBS TV for the first time in 1956.
