George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of October 29th, 2007:
- MONDAY, OCTOBER 29: Saturday
night’s Drug and Fire Prevention programs and Haunted Trail at the
Boonville Elks Lodge was a huge success. Over 670 persons went through
the trail, and three out of four of the dog shows were filled to
capacity. The Boonville Police were a great help directing traffic for
safe entrance and exiting of the parking lot. Congratulations to Nick
and Amanda Briggs of Forestport on the birth Saturday of a daughter,
Baileigh Elizabeth, arriving at 9 pounds, 7-1/2 ounces. The proud
grandparents are Bob and Cindy Field of Woodgate. Happy 40th anniversary
wishes to Jack and Betty Marshall of Old Forge from Dick and Ruth Reese.
Ken and Carol Kulpa of the Denley Road celebrate their 47th today, with
best wishes from all their family. It must be wildlife today near the
radio station. At 7 a.m., there were 14 turkeys and two deer across the
field grazing.
- TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30:
Congratulations to Linden Lehman and Becky Rice of Kirschnerville on the
birth yesterday of a daughter, Charlee Ann, from his six sisters and mom
and dad. Herbert and Berneida Farney of Lowville celebrate their 56th
anniversary, with best wishes from Simon and Marsha Gingerich and
family. Happy 53rd anniversary wishes go out to “Yogi” and Winnie Yelton
of Talcottville from Mike and Debbie. Boonville area residents are
reminded that every Tuesday, the Department of Motor Vehicles holds
office hours from 9 to 11:30 a.m. and from noon to 2:30 p.m. at the
town/village offices on Route 12 to take care of your registrations,
etc.
- WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 31: Happy 43rd
anniversary wishes to Paul and Pat Gyore of Watson, from son Tracey,
Jennifer and the grandchildren. A large ring circled the moon early this
morning, which usually indicates rain within 24 hours. In 2001 on
Halloween night, the first full moon in 46 years was visible. The next
full moon on Halloween night will be in the year 2020. The largest
snowfall on Halloween night was in 1993, when 11.75 inches was measured.
By morning, there was 13 inches of snow on the ground and area schools
were closed. Stillwater Reservoir had 18.5 inches of snow. This Saturday
night brings an end of Daylight Savings Time. I counted 16 clocks at our
house, plus my wristwatch and the ones in our car and truck that have to
be reset. I usually forget one of them. Some people change their smoke
detector batteries at that time. Daylight Savings Time will return on
the second Saturday in March.
- THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 1: The weather
was nice for all the little ones out trick-or-treating last evening. The
afternoon high temperature of 65 degrees brought a warm evening and a
lot of very original costumes. Matthew’s Place in Boonville reports that
the food pantry is now open only on Thursdays and Fridays from 10 a.m.
until 2 p.m. Happy 60th anniversary wishes go out to Nick and Lorna
Lehman of Croghan from their family. Ford Motor Company started
production today in 1927 on a new model, the Model A. The car was to
sell at $460 and nearly 5 million were sold before production ended in
early 1932.
- FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 2: Rainfall
totals of the month vary from location to location. The Merry Hill
Weather Station measured 10.12 inches, Highmarket 9.74 inches, and on
the Rector Road, 6.17 inches. Merry Hill records show that the yearly
precipitation to date is about 6 inches less rain than last year.
