George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of October 22nd, 2007:
- MONDAY, OCTOBER 22:
Congratulations to Bridget Dunaway and T.J. Phelps of Port Leyden on the
birth this morning of a daughter, Lydia Rose Phelps, weighing 4 pounds,
10 ounces, with best wishes from the proud grandparents. Stella Moscicki
of Hawkinsville celebrated her 80th birthday, with best wishes from her
six sisters and three brothers. Yesterday, Bob and Sally Croniser of
Locust Grove celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary, with love from
their family. One of the best remembered “Mouseketeers” from the Mickey
Mouse Club, Annette Funicello, was born in Utica, NY, in 1942. In
weather history in 1976, the North Country was measuring anywhere from 8
to 15 inches of new snow with half-mile visibility at the station. In
the September-October issue of the 1987 Conservationist, it was reported
that the average apple tree has from 50,000 to 100,000 leaves, the
mature sugar maple has 160,000 leaves, and a large oak tree may have
700,000 leaves. No wonder we get tired raking leaves.
- TUESDAY, OCTOBER 23: On this
morning in 1999, we reported a huge block fire in downtown Lowville,
which destroyed what was commonly called the “Western Auto” block. The
fire started at 7:30 p.m. in a third floor apartment over the “Comfort
Zone” business. This block has never been redeveloped. In 1988, the
Jackson Hill Weather Station measured 9 inches of snow on the ground. In
1984, a light earthquake was felt at 2:30 a.m. in the North Country. The
first snow-covered ground of the 2002 season was found this morning with
3 inches measured. NBC talk show host Johnny Carson was born in Corning,
Iowa, in 1925. he started hosting the show in 1962, retiring in 1992,
and died in Los Angeles January 23, 2005.
- WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 24: Finally,
some long-awaited rain arrived yesterday. From Monday night to this
morning, the Merry Hill Weather Station totaled 3.01 inches, while 2.61
inches of rain fell in the village, and 2.67 inches in Highmarket. There
were no reports of cellars flooding. There still are some brilliant leaf
colors in this area. Peak coloration didn’t occur all at once this year,
which has given us a longer viewing season. In 1976, a heavy snowfall
brought 10 to 12 inches of base on the slopes at Snow Ridge in Turin.
They offered free skiing, and 500 people arrived to ski in the first
snow of the season. If you grew up in the late ’50s, you would remember
the song, “Chantilly Lace” by the Big Bopper. He was born J.P.
Richardson in Sabine Pass, Texas, and was killed in the plane crash with
Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens on February 3, 1959. “Chantilly Lace” was
the third most played song in 1958. Belated birthday wishes go out to
Kenneth Hill of Turin, who celebrated his 91st yesterday, from his
friends at Brown’s Plumbing and Heating in Lowville.
- THURSDAY, OCTOBER 25: Ed and
EvaMae Swiernik of Turin celebrate their 49th anniversary today, with
love and best wishes from family and friends. Edward Mushtare of
Lowville, the taxi driver, celebrated his 80th birthday today, with
happy wishes from all his children. Actor Vincent Price, best remembered
for his horror movies, died on this day in 1993. He was born in 1911 in
St. Louis, Missouri, attended Yale, and also studied at the University
of London, and made his first movie in 1938. The Country Music
Association’s award show on November 7 will find Brad Paisley bringing
the Brentwood High School Marching Band with him, as they are now
featured on his CD version of “Online.” Singer-songwriter Roger Miller
died of cancer in Los Angeles, CA, in 1992 at the age of 56.
- FRIDAY, OCTOBER 26: Yesterday,
Hank and Marilyn Daskiewich of Boonville celebrated their 49th
anniversary, with best wishes from their family. Today, Bill and Betty
Tanney of Locust Grove celebrate their 50th anniversary, with best
wishes from family and friends. Best wishes for a happy 96th birthday go
out to Floyd Ulrich of Lowville, a former county clerk, from his wife
Kaye and family. It was at 1:30 a.m., October 27, 1980, when a huge
block fire started in downtown Lowville. Destroyed in the blaze were
Antler’s Tavern, the Sherwin-Williams Store, Sears Catalog, and Burkart
Tire. At that time, snow was falling with 5.8 inches measured at the
Jackson Hill Weather Station in Boonville, and 8 inches was on the
ground.
