George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of October 20th, 2008:
- MONDAY, OCTOBER 20:
Congratulations to Chase Nagy and Tiffany Williams on the birth last
evening of a daughter, Gabrielle Lynn, arriving at 6 pounds, 12 ounces,
and 20 inches long. Best wishes from Grandpa Harvey, Grandma Cindy, and
all their family. Yesterday, Dave and Chris Davis of Boonville reached
their 40th anniversary, with congratulations from all their friends. The
last three days either matched or broke low temperatures officially from
the past 30 years. Saturday’s low was 26 degrees, and Sunday and today’s
low was 24. An approaching cold front will keep the week’s low
temperatures in the 20s with possible snow Tuesday night and Wednesday
morning. Baseball Hall of Famer Mickey Mantle was born in Spavinaw,
Oklahoma, in 1931. He died on August 13, 1995.
- TUESDAY, OCTOBER 21: Happy
anniversary wishes to Kenny Morrison of the Number Four Road from wife
Elaine. Birthday wishes to Janice Gladys Stephon of West Leyden on her
76th birthday, from all her friends. Automotive paint suppliers, PPG and
Dupont, watch color trends and they predict blue will be the next color
favorite for cars. They report that 20 percent of the cards produced
this year were silver, followed by white (18 percent), Black (17), and
red, 13 percent. We own a white car and a red truck. One of Elvis
Presley’s best remembered movies, “Jailhouse Rock,” opened in theaters
in 1957, and featured a dance routine that was considered a classic.
- WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 22: We
observed our first snow in the air this morning. Sticking snow was
reported from Otter Lake to Old Forge, and Brantingham was coated also.
Highmarket measured a tenth of an inch at 5:25 a.m. In 1976, reports
ranged from 8 to 15 inches of snow in various locations. Today, Joan
Yager of Boonville celebrates her birthday with her children,
grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Her family totals 68 members. It
was 7:20 p.m. this evening in 1999 when a fire was reported on the third
floor of the Lowville business district downtown. Over a half-dozen
businesses were destroyed and the large lot has never been rebuilt.
Daylight Savings Time ends on Sunday, November 2, at 2 a.m., becoming
Standard Time until March 8, 2009. Remember to turn your clocks back one
hour either Saturday night or Sunday morning to be at the correct time.
- THURSDAY, OCTOBER 23: Fred Kline
of the East Road in Boonville had a five-way bypass operation on Monday
at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Utica, and is doing fine, according to wife
Elaine. Fred Wiedmer, Town of Boonville Highway Superintendent, reports
that work began yesterday to replace 24 I-Beams under the steel-deck
bridge over the Black River on the Moose River Road near Whelley’s.
Traffic will be disrupted until Monday for short periods of time.
- FRIDAY, OCTOBER 24: Another cold
morning here in the North Country. We watched 22 degrees arrive at 6:49
a.m., with Highmarket reporting 21 degrees. In 1976, Snow Ridge in Turin
reported 10 to 12 inches of base on the slopes and offered free skiing.
It was reported that 500 skiers took them up on the offer. It was
tonight in 1999, a small bear cub ambled up Grove Street in Boonville
and was watched by many residents.
