George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of October 16th, 2006:
- MONDAY, OCTOBER 16: David and
Donna Douglass of Boonville celebrate their 13th anniversary today, with
best wishes from their family. Karl and Maryann Kranbuhl of Boonville
celebrate their anniversary today with best wishes from the Denslows,
Penny and Belle. Folklore dictates that today is St. Gallo’s Day and if
there’s no rain on this day, a dry spring will follow. And it didn’t
rain. Country singer-songwriter Freddy Fender died Saturday in Corpus
Christy, Texas, after a lengthy battle with lung cancer. A native of San
Benito, Texas, was 69 year’s old. He will be best remembered for his hit
songs, “Wasted Days and Wasted Nights,” and “Before The Next Teardrop
Falls” from the mid-70s. In car history, Chevrolet introduced the first
El Camino on this day in 1958. I’ve never seen one at any of the area
“Cruise-Ins.” One-time star of “Three’s Company,” Suzanne Somers, is 60
today, born in San Bruno, California. Her first movie appearance was the
blonde driving the black T-Bird in “American Graffiti.”

anniversary wishes to Doug Smith from his wife Carol in the Town of
Ohio. The 1989 San Francisco earthquake, measuring 7.1 on the Richter
Scale, struck at 5:04 p.m., killing 63 people with 100,000 buildings
damaged. The third game of the World Series between the San Francisco
Giants and the Oakland Athletics was interrupted as the world was
watching the televised game. Actor Tom Poston is 85 today. A native of
Cincinnati, started his comedy career on the Steve Allen Show and in
later years on “Newhart,” as the Handyman George at the Stratford Inn in
Vermont. Country superstar Alan Jackson was born in Newnan, Georgia, 48
years ago. Motorcycle stuntman Evel Knievel, a native of Butte, Montana,
is 68 today. Reba McEntire, Ronnie Milsap and the late Roy Orbison are
among the first group of inductees into the Downtown Nashville, Music
City Hall, Walk of Fame, in a ceremony planned for November 5. If you
are a new quarter collector, the new North Dakota coin is now available.
- WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 18: Ray and
Marilyn Hoffman of Remsen celebrate their 54th anniversary, with best
wishes from the family. A Happy 80th birthday to Victoria Cobb from
Henry and Sharon Bardo of Turin. A new rain record was set at the Merry
Hill Weather Station this morning when 2.15” was measured, surpassing
the 2.01” from 2004. Fluffy lake-effect snow equals 20” per one inch of
water content, so it’s reasonable to assume we could have received over
40” of snow if the temperature was lower. One of the early rock and
rollers, Chuck Berry, a native of St. Louis, Missouri, is 80 today. Most
baby boomers will remember, “Sweet Little Sixteen and Johnny B. Good,”
his biggest hits. Today we enjoy cell phones and can call anywhere, but
in 1892, the first long-distance telephone line between New York City
and Chicago went into service, but only one person at a time could call
out. Russia officially transferred ownership of Alaska to the United
States in 1867. The purchase price was $7.2 million or less than 2¢ per
acre, with Alaska almost the size of Texas. What a deal!
- THURSDAY, OCTOBER 19: Celebrating
38th anniversaries today are Dave and Chris Davis of Boonville, and Gary
and Denise LaVancha of Lowville, with best wishes from their family and
friends. She appeared at the Boonville Fair in 1973 and again in 1984
and today is Jeannie C. Riley’s birthday. She was born in Anson, Texas,
61 years ago, and who could ever forget her huge record, “Harper Valley
PTA,” a million seller in the year 1968. The daughter of former
president Jimmy Carter, Amy Carter, was born in Plains, Georgia, in

13, 1995. Remembered for his role on the TV series “Mash,” William
Christopher, was born in Evanston, Illinois, 74 years ago. Singer Tom
