George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of October 13th, 2008:
- MONDAY, OCTOBER 13: A gorgeous
weekend was enjoyed, with a 71-degree temperature yesterday. There’s
still a lot of color to the foliage in all directions. I was told that
every hotel and motel in the Adirondacks was filled with the overflow
ending up in Boonville. Two years ago, snow covered the ground on the
Rector Road after Boonville measured .45” of rain and 26 degrees. Today,
Mildred Moshier of Croghan celebrates her 90th birthday and her sister,
Clare Moshier, also has a birthday, with best wishes from their family.
Singer-songwriter Paul Simon was born in Newark, New Jersey, on today’s
date in 1941. Singer-actress Marie Osmond was born in Ogden, Utah, 49
years ago. Raised with seven brothers, Marie was the only girl.
- TUESDAY, OCTOBER 14: We had
several high number anniversaries called in today. Clayton and Elinor
Weiler of Constableville have been married 58 years, and Gil and Freda
Millard of Lowville also celebrate their 58th. Gordon and Alice Campany
of Denmark celebrate their 55th, and David and Kay Smithling of Lowville
count up 45 years today. In 1999, I had rain with winds up to 31 mph at
5:45 a.m. The temperature made a sharp drop, changing the rain to snow.
The wet snow packed our north-facing window to the point that I couldn’t
see out. A short time later the snow melted away.
- WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 15:
Congratulations to Joe and Carrie Dolan of the Golden Road on the birth
yesterday of a son, Noah Douglas. He entered the world at 8 pounds, 4
ounces, and was 20 inches long. He joins brother Thomas at home. Happy
53rd anniversary wishes to Frank and Marylou Croniser of the Brown Road,
Talcottville, from Barry, Jody, and family. Birthday wishes are sent out
to Mary Tuttle of Lyons Falls. Her entire family congratulates her on
her 80th today. Long associated in the auto industry, Lee Iacocca was
born in Allentown, PA, in 1924. She was Laverne on the TV series,
Laverne and Shirley. Today, Penny Marshall, a native of the Bronx, is
66.
- THURSDAY, OCTOBER 16: We’re
seeing some heavy rain this morning. At 4:40 a.m., my rain gauge
collected .20” here at the Station. By 9 a.m. another .45” was measured.
I’m sure many trees were emptied of their leaves. The man associated
with a dictionary, Noah Webster, was born in West Hartford, CT, in 1758.
He was a teacher and journalist, and died on May 21, 1843, at age 85.
The first Chevrolet El Camino was introduced today in 1958. The vehicle
was only produced for two years, but was re-introduced in 1964 and was
very successful that time. They were discontinued when GM started
production of front-wheel-drive vehicles. There are rumors that a
brand-new type El Camino will again be produced in the next two years.
- FRIDAY, OCTOBER 17: Aaron Beyel
of West Leyden reaches his 92nd birthday, with happy wishes from his
family. Edie at the Merry Hill Weather Station reported the two-day rain
total added up to .97”. With the rain and wind of the past few days, a
good share of the colorful leaves are now on the ground. It was this day
in 1989 when a deadly earthquake hit the San Francisco area at 5:04 p.m.
The quake measured 7.1 on the Richter Scale and was seen by millions on
TV, because the third game of the World Series was to start in
Candlestick Park. It was reported that 63 people were killed, more than
3,000 injured, and over 100,00 buildings were damaged.
