George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of October 9th, 2006:

  • MONDAY, OCTOBER 9: According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s national agriculture statistics service, pumpkins may be in short supply in eastern and central New York. Because of the too wet weather, some pumpkin growers reported a low of 25 percent to as high as 75 percent yields this fall. This past week has quickly changed the foliage colors to peak to “past peak.” Leaves are starting to drop. Each year I mention estimated leaf accumulations on various trees. The average apple tree has between 50,000 and 100,000 leaves, sugar maples, 160,000, and large oaks as many as 700,000 leaves. No wonder you’re tired after raking! It was last night’s date in 1993 when an Air Force jet ran out of fuel. The pilot ejected and landed near State Dam Road in Alder Creek. The jet came down near the Joslyn Road near Remsen. No injuries were reported to people on the ground. Former “Beatle” John Lennon was born on this day in Liverpool, England, in 1940. He was assassinated in front of his apartment in New York City on December 9, 1980.

  • TUESDAY, OCTOBER 10: Tom and Ida Bates of Watson celebrate their 53rd anniversary, with best wishes from the whole family. Happy 83rd birthday wishes to Clara Davoy of the Number 4 Road in Watson, from her family. The first mention of snow shows up in Thursday night’s forecast and may extend to Saturday. Country singer Tanya Tucker was born in Seminole, Texas, 48 years ago. Her huge hit song in 1972, “Delta Dawn,” was recorded when she was 14 years old and she is still singing today. The Northern Lights were dancing in the sky on tonight’s date in 1997. One year ago, we reported that 76 wind turbines on Tug Hill were completed. There must have been 500 geese flying south of the radio station at 11:30 a.m.

  • WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 11: Two couples celebrate their 31st anniversary today. Rick and Colleen West of Watson and Terry and Ellie Kelley of Indian River have matching numbers, with best wishes from friends and families. A new ultra-clean diesel fuel will be available as of next Sunday offering a 10 percent reduction in soot and by January, when a new generation of diesel engines become available, emission deductions up to 95 percent can be expected, according to the Energy Information Administration. A 5 cent increase per gallon will be added. Best known for his “Superman” movies, Christopher Reeve died today in 2004 at the age of 52, at his home in Westchester County, New York. His wife Dana, 44, passed away on March 6, 2006, from lung cancer, although she never smoked. The Jackson Hill Weather Station measured 3.2 inches of snow this morning in 1987, and we enjoyed 74 degrees today in 2003. A bull moose paid a visit to the Croniser farm on the West Road, about a mile from the radio station in 2000, and returned to the farm on October 18.

  • THURSDAY, OCTOBER 12: Happy 49th anniversary wishes to John and Diane Hastwell of Talcottville, from their family. A bull moose was spotted yesterday afternoon crossing the Fish Creek Road near the hunting club. Winds up to 45 mph were recorded this morning at 5:30 a.m. on the Rector Road, near the wind turbines, and contributed to the leaf loss. I measured a gust of 25 mph at 8:03 p.m. in the village. Singer-songwriter-actor John Denver was killed this morning in 1997 when his recently acquired experimental aircraft, ran out of fuel, crashing off the coast near Monterey, California.

  • FRIDAY, OCTOBER 13: I found a note in the station mailbox to send congratulations to Joe Bourgeois and Cindy Hildenbrandt on the birth of a son, Dakota Michael, born last evening, weighing 7 pounds, 4 ounces, with love from all your family and friends. Jim and Lois West of Glenfield celebrate their 50th anniversary from their friends and relatives. Mildred Moshier of Croghan counts up 88 candles on her birthday cake, and her sister, Claire Moser, also celebrates her birthday, with best wishes from their family. Reports are coming in from Buffalo, NY, of a massive snowstorm that has accumulated nearly 2 feet of snow. About 220,000 electric customers are without power, as power lines were knocked down by tree branches that are still covered with leaves. This has turned into the biggest early snowfall in the city’s history. Singer-songwriter Paul Simon of “Simon and Garfunkel” fame, was born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1941. Because of a typographical error, last Monday’s column should have read, Happy 60th anniversary wishes to Bob Cook of Boonville, from wife Betty.
