George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of October 8th, 2007:
- MONDAY, OCTOBER 8: Happy 60th
anniversary wishes go out to Nelson and Lorenna Moser of Castorland from
their seven children and their families. The Fall Arts Festival in
Boonville was a huge success until about 3 p.m. when a heavy rain soaked
the village. My village rain gauge measured .6 inches, while .3 inches
was reported on Merry Hill, and no rain was measured on Spencer Road. In
1979, the Jackson Hill Weather Station reported 3/4 inches of snow, with
1 inch on the ground. I saw snowflakes in the air on my way to the
station that morning. In 1993, an F-16 aircraft ran out of gas, crashing
hear the Joslyn Road in Remsen. The pilot ejected, landing near State
Dam Road in Alder Creek. Comedian-actor Chevy Chase was born Cornelius
Crane Chase in New York City in 1943.
- TUESDAY, OCTOBER 9:
Congratulations to Heath and Sheila Hutchins of Port Leyden on the birth
yesterday morning of a daughter, Victoria, with best wishes from Starr
and Heath. Pete and Ginger Poppleton of Boonville celebrate their 42nd
anniversary today, with congratulations from their children and
grandchildren. In weather history, 2 inches of snow was measured in Lake
Placid this morning in 1988. A moose showed up at Bob Stabb’s farm in
Talcottville two years ago and there were snowflakes in the air. Six
years ago this evening, a female moose crossed the Hogsback Road. Former
“Beatle” John Lennon was born in Liverpool, England, in 1940. His son
Sean with Yoko Ono was born 32 years ago. John was killed on December 8,
1980 in front of his apartment in New York City by a crazed fan.
- WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10: Happy
birthday to Clara Davoy of the Number Four Road in Lowville, who
celebrates her 84th, with best wishes from her family. On tonight’s date
in 1997, a moose stopped in Tim LeVan’s yard in Constableville and
chewed the tops off his sunflowers, before leaving for Highmarket. Also
on that night, the Northern Lights were visible. In 2005, it was
reported that 76 wind turbines had been completed on Tug Hill. Country
singer Tim McGraw hit the charts for the first time in 1992 with a song
called “Welcome to the Club,” and currently is in the top 10 with “If
You’re Reading This.” Singer Tanya Tucker was born in Seminole, Texas,
49 years ago today.
- THURSDAY, OCTOBER 11: Today’s
forecast is calling for three days of badly needed rain. In the village
I measured 1.08 inches, which was the most of the six reporting areas I
check each morning. Three years ago this morning we learned that
Christopher Reeve died at age 52. He is best remembered for his
“Superman” movies and was paralyzed after a horse accident in May 1995,
and since had been an advocate for spinal cord research. He died of
heart failure.
- FRIDAY, OCTOBER 12:
Congratulations on Saturday to Jill Williamson, daughter of Chuck and
Karen Williamson, who will marry Dante Ross of Greensburg, PA, at 2 p.m.
at St. Mary’s Church in West Leyden. Happy 50th anniversary wishes to
John and Diann Hastwell of Boonville from their 11 children and their
families. Singer-actor John Denver was killed 10 years ago off the coast
of California, when his recently acquired experiment airplane ran out of
gas. He had co-starred with George Burns in the movie “Oh God” in 1977
and won the “Entertainer of the Year” award at the Country Music
Association’s award show in 1975.
