George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of October 1st, 2007:
- MONDAY, OCTOBER 1: Ray and Anna
Gordon of Lowville celebrate their 66th anniversary, and Joe and Albina
Gyore celebrate their 58th today from friends in Lowville. Yesterday
Garnet and Teresa Birchenough, also of Lowville, observed their 57th
anniversary. A moose weighing about 800 pounds walked into the roadway
near the Interstate 81 overpass in the Town of Pamelia at 6:30 a.m.
Saturday, and was struck and killed. The lady driving the SUV did
sustain head bruises and heavy damage to her vehicle. Last Friday
morning, a flock of about 60 geese flew south over the radio station,
which was the first I’ve seen this season. In 1997, the temperature was
33 degrees at the Jackson Hill Weather Station and snowflakes were
reported, with Gomer Hill, Crofoot Hill, and Thendara also reporting the
same. In 1971, Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida, opened.
- TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2:
Congratulations to Jason and Wendy Ward of Port Leyden on the birth
yesterday of a daughter, Paige Makenzie, with best wishes from Uncle
Chris and Aunt Tina. Bob and Betty Cook of Boonville celebrate their
61st anniversary today, according to a dear friend. I had a report in
this morning that several people watched a young moose swimming in Otter
Lake, off Route 28, on Friday. Also on Sunday morning, a moose crossed
the Denley Road and was walking south toward Boonville. It was tonight’s
date in 1962 when Johnny Carson started as the host of NBC’s Tonight
Show. After nearly 30 years, he announced he would retire in 1992, and
Jay Leno became the new host. Johhny passed away in 2005 at the age of
79 in California. The very first Peanuts comic strip and the first time
Charlie Brown was called “Good Ol’ Charlie,” was published on October 2,
1950, and continued until February 13, 2000. Charles Schultz drew 17,897
comic strips, 15,391 daily strips, and 2,506 Sunday strips. Repeated
strips are still running today. In 2003, small hailstones fell from the
sky at 11:45 in Boonville, with no accumulation, but up on the Rector
Road in Martinsburg, 5 inches of snow was measured.
- WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 3: Happy
Birthday to Elmer Nafziger of Lowville on his 82nd, from his Croghan and
Lowville families. During a cold snap in 1996, snowflakes were reported
on Mohawk Hill and in Old Forge. On last night’s date in 2004, a strong
wind traveled across the Black River Valley. The winds at the Starr
Klein property on the East Road were strong enough to twist trees
resembling tornado conditions. Historically, President Abraham Lincoln
proclaimed the last Thursday in November to be Thanksgiving Day in 1863.
- THURSDAY, OCTOBER 4: Today marks
the 50th anniversary of the 184-pound Sputnik Satellite. It was the
first manmade earth satellite starting the Space Age. Maybe best
remembered for his starring role in the movie epic, “Ben Hur” or Ten
Commandments,” Charlton Heston, a native of Evanstong, IL, is 84 today.
In weather history, it was in 1999 when a cold front entered the state.
It was 36 degrees in Boonville, and Lake Placid measured 2 inches of
snow, 1 inch in Plattsburg, and the ground was white in Copenhagen. In
1996, the temperature in Old Forge was 20 degrees with snowflakes on and
off all day.
- FRIDAY, OCTOBER 5: John and Lucy
Wawrzyniak of Talcottville celebrate their over 50th anniversary today,
with best wishes from all their friends. The Boonville area will see
peak foliage color this weekend, just in time for the Fall Arts Festival
in the village.
