George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of September 29th, 2008:
- MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 29: Back to
work after a beautiful vacation week in Colorado where peak color had
arrived. Many thanks to son Chris and René for being our tour guides. We
enjoyed close to 1,000 miles of beautiful scenery from Vail to Pikes
Peak. In Rocky Mountain National Park, we watched over two dozen Elk
roaming about, with many being photographed. Congratulations to Tim and
Nina Ossont of Cambridge, NY, on the birth Wednesday, September 24, of a
son, Rowan Randy, entering the world at 6 pounds, 12 ounces. Tim is a
native of West Leyden. Happy 41st anniversary wishes to Lila Gozalkowski
of Port Leyden from husband Carl. Early rock and roller who turned
country, Jerry Lee Lewis, was born in Ferriday, Louisiana, 73 years ago.
- TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 30: A moose
was standing on the Fitch Road at 7:15 a.m. this morning about 2 miles
from the radio station. Kevin Mathis, driving his Adirondack school bus,
had to stop and students got their first look at a 2 or 3-year-old
moose. It was a year ago that a moose crossed the Denley Road in Port
Leyden all the way up to the Croniser farm. A huge puffball mushroom was
brought to me eight years ago. It was 14 inches high, 2 feet in
diameter, on 6 feet, 8 inches of circumference. It was found on the
Stanley Jones farm in Talcottville.
- WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 1:
Congratulations to Matthew and Maryjane Pricer of Lyons Falls on the
birth last evening of a son, Carter Matthew, who weighed 8 pounds, 13
ounces, with happy wishes form the Mathis family. Two Lowville couples
celebrate some big anniversary numbers. Ray and Anna Gordon celebrate 67
years, and Joe and Albina Gyore celebrate their 59th, with best wishes
from their Lowville friends. Peak foliage color is reported in most
areas this week, which is pretty much on schedule. Congress created
Yosemite National Park in 1890, consisting of over 1,500 square miles,
about the size of Rhode Island. Over 3 million people visit the park
annually.
- THURSDAY, OCTOBER 2: A moose with
no antlers was spotted by George Fox, standing on the West Road, just
north of the radio station at 6:40 a.m. this morning. In 1997, a moose
was seen in Talcottville and one in Belfort. In 2002, a moose crossed
the Waters Road in Lowville. On this day in 2003, hail stones fell from
a passing cloud at 11:45 a.m. in Boonville, with 5 inches of snow
measured on the Rector Road near Martinsburg. Today, Bob and Betty Cook
of Boonville observe their 62nd anniversary, with best wishes from their
friends. Judge George Davis will celebrate his 90th birthday today, with
best wishes from all his friends and co-workers in the Lewis County
Courthouse in Lowville. Race fans might like to know the first race at
Watkins Glenn, NY, was held today in 1948.
- FRIDAY, OCTOBER 3: There were
snowflakes on the Rector Road this morning, near Martinsburg, and also
at Big Moose, but no snow was seen in the air here. Happy 57th
anniversary wishes to Norman and LeEtta Widrick of Castorland, from
their family. Elmer Nafziger of Lowville will count up 83rd birthday
candles today, with happy wishes from all his family. A founding member
of the folk music group, the Kingston Trio, has died. Nicky Reynolds
passed away Wednesday in San Diego at age 75. He had been hospitalized
with acute respiratory disease and other illnesses, but died when his
family took him off life support. He, along with Bob Shane and Dave
Guard, made up the trio. Guard was replaced by John Stewart in 1961.
Unfortunately, Stewart died this past January, also in San Diego, of a
massive stroke at age 68.
