George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of September 25th, 2006:
- MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 25: Last Friday
and Saturday featured many moose sightings in the North Country and some
beautiful pictures can be found on a website, newzjunky.com. Saturday
afternoon featured an appreciation party for all the volunteers who help
make the Woodsmen’s Field Days a big success each year. This year’s
event was held at Stysh’s Brown Barn and everyone had a great time, with
the local band, “Triple Threat,” providing the music. Yesterday, Pete
and Norma Kelley celebrated their 59th anniversary, with best wishes
from John, Mary, and family. Soon it will be time to refill the bird
feeders that emptied out last spring, since there is no need to feed the
birds during the spring and summer, as natural food is supplied.
- TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26: Happy 42nd
anniversary wishes go out to Rodney and Betty Hill of Lowville, and
Larry and Suzie Emerson of Greig also celebrate their 42nd today, from
family and friends. In 1956, the Jackson Hill Weather Station reported
32 degrees and 1-inch of snow this morning. By afternoon, the

Forks, North Dakota, 59 years ago. Singer-actress Olivia Newton-John, a
native of Cambridge, England, celebrates her 58th birthday. One-time
co-star of “Little House on the Prairie,” Melissa Sue Anderson, was born
in Berkeley, California, 44 years ago.

birthday to Frank House, superintendent of South Lewis Central School,
from all the staff. In 1954, Steve Allen debut as the host of the NBC TV
show, “The Tonight Show.” Actor and teenage heartthrob singer from the

In 1963, the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville was purchased by the National
Life and Insurance Company for $200,000 and was renamed the Grand Ole
Opry House. I found out this morning from listeners that the Wooley
Caterpillars, the brown and black ones, which folklore says can predict
winter weather ahead, change into Isabella Tiger Moths. They are
described as having yellow or pink bodies, and top wings a yellowish
hue, with the lower wings beige in color. Thanks for the information.
- THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 28: It was an
unusually quiet morning at the station, with few phone calls. The
creator of the “Li’l Abner” comic strip, Al Capp, as born today in New
Haven, CT, in 1909. He died in Cambridge, MA, in 1979. The Beatles’
song, “Hey Jude,” was the number one song in America in 1968 and set a
record for being the longest song to arrive at number one. The song was
over 7 minutes long. Singer-actor John Denver loved flying and was an
aircraft collector, and wanted to take a trip in a space shuttle. NASA
turned him down and he then offered the Soviet Union $10 million for a
space trip, but again was rejected.

Verna Sullivan of Constableville celebrated their 60th wedding
anniversary yesterday, with best wishes from their loving family. Happy
