George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of September 24th, 2007:
- MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 24:
Congratulations to Casey Hoffert and Samantha DeVoe of Boonville on the
birth Sunday, September 23, of a son, Deakin Daniel at 4 pounds, 15
ounces, from their families. On this day, from 1998 to 2003, I received
five different moose sightings in North Country locations. I haven’t had
any reports in two weeks this year. In 1934, baseball legend Babe Ruth
played his last game with the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. The
first factory built, Ford, Model T, came off the assembly line in 1908
at a cost of $850. He was the voice of many “Olympic Broadcasts” for the
ABC Network, Jim McKay, a native of Philadelphia, is 86 today.
- TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 25: Gertrude
Horning of Copenhagen observes her 85th birthday, with best wishes from
her son and daughter-in-law. A storm, including severe thunderstorms,
knocked down about 100 trees between the Mathis and Goodhines Road near
West Leyden in 2001. The Jackson Hill weather station measured 4.86” of
rain from that downpour. Kenny Kulpa on the Denley Road collected 7.29”
that morning. Usually at this time, we’ve received reports of geese
flying south, but perhaps because of the warmer temperatures, they
haven’t started their migration route yet. This year’s apple crop
appears to be above normal, even with a drier than normal summer.
Highmarket weather observer Bob Morczek has measured 35.48” of rainfall
up to the present date, compared to 38.80” last year. Congratulations to
the eight new members who were initiated into the Boonville Lodge of
Elks last evening, including my wife Laurie. Between eight to 10 members
will be inducted during next month’s initiation ceremony. Television
celebrity Barbara Walters, a native of Boston, is 78 today. Basketball
player, Scottie Pippen, was born in Hamburg, Arkansas, 42 years ago.
- WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 26: The
Merry Hill Weather Station reached 81 degrees yesterday, breaking the 71
degree reading in 1998. My records go back 30 years and yesterday was
the warmest day. Congratulations to Martin and Amy Williams Seeley of
Boonville on the birth last evening of a son, Brayden Martin, who joins
two brothers at home. Best wishes from the Williams and Seeley families.
Happy 43rd anniversary wishes go out to Larry and Susie Emerson of Lyons
Falls from family and friends. Happy birthday to Ed Yancey of Lowville,
on his 91st, from the West family.
- THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 27: Happy
38th anniversary wishes to John and Cheryl Baumes of Snow Bird Lake from
their friends. Celebrity birthdays today include Actor Wilford Brimley,
a native of Salt Lake City, Utah, who is 73, Singer “Meatloaf” (Marvin
Lee Aday) was born in Dallas, Texas, 56 years ago, and Singer-Actor
Shaun Cassidy, a native of Los Angeles, is 49.
- FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 28:
Congratulations to Brent and Heather Seller on the birth of a son,
Maximus, yesterday, best wishes from Grandpa and Grandma Crofoot in
Talcotville. Allen and Mary Wahl of Port Leyden celebrate their 44th
anniversary, with best wishes from sister Margaret and Ronald Dolan of
Copenhagen. On Saturday, Carl and Lila Gozalkowski of Port Leyden will
celebrate their 44th anniversary. A bull moose was sighted near Remsen
at 6:50 a.m. between Fairchild and Lake Julia roads. The late singer,
John Denver, offered the Soviet Union $10 million to let him travel into
space on Soyez shuttle, but they turned him down. He had also applied to
NASA for the opportunity to go into space on The Challenger, and again
was by-passed. The shuttle exploded, killing all of the astronauts,
after its last launch. America’s favorite singing cowboy and actor, Gene
Autry, was born in Tioga, Texas, on September 29, 1907. He died October
2, 1998 at 91 years old. Fall Foliage colors are expected to be near
peak in the Adirondack Mountains this weekend.
