following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of September 11th, 2006:
- MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 11: Our family
had a nice reunion Sunday in Syracuse, as son Chris and wife Rene flew
in from Denver to be part of Chris’ college roommate’s wedding on
Saturday. Son Dan and his wife Susan, Laurie and I met at the Carousel
in the big mall and went out to dinner at Dinosaur’s before they had to
fly out at 5:30 p.m. They have their plane reservations for a Christmas
trip home. Happy 40th anniversary wishes to Joyce Collins of Old Forge
from husband Bill. Driving down Erwin Street in Boonville Saturday
morning, on my way to the station, a small rabbit darted around the
street before jumping over the curb. In baseball history, Pete Rose of
the Cincinnati Reds passed a record set by Ty Cobb, when he had a career
hit number 4,192 against the San Diego Padres in 1985. In 1970 on this
day, Ford Motor Company introduced the Ford Pinto, a small car costing
under $2,000. However, the car was built with a gas tank placement
problem and when struck from behind, the tank ruptured, many fires and
lawsuits developed. In 1962, the Beatles recorded their first two songs,
“Love Me Do” and “P.S. I Love You in London.”
- TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 12: Elmer and
Gladys Nafziger of Lowville celebrate their 56th anniversary today, from
their six children and families. Yesterday, Glen and Virginia Zehr of
the Lowville area celebrated their 50th anniversary, with best wishes
from their son Scott. The country music world was saddened upon learning
that Johnny Cash had died last night in 2003 at age 71, and also actor
John Ritter died the same evening at 56 years old. Northern New York was
treated to a display of Northern Lights in 1993. WBRV FM moved from Post
Street in Boonville back to our Route 12D studios at noon in 1991.
Country music legend George Jones was born near Saratoga, Texas, 75
years ago. In 1994, on his 63rd birthday, he underwent triple by-pass
surgery in Nashville.
- WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 13: Happy
birthday to Benny Glenn of Valley View Court Apartments in Lowville,
from Michael, Joanie and family. She said she was born on Friday the
13th, and it was rainy like today’s weather. Kelly and Brian Bourgeois
of Boonville celebrate their 20th anniversary, with best wishes from
Brad, Megan, and Mom, Dad, and family. At 5 a.m. this morning in 2001,
the first moose sighting was reported on the McKeever Road. In 1983, it
was reported that the water level of the Black River was at its lowest
stage, setting a 30-year record. It was this day in 1977 when General
Motors introduced the Oldsmobile 88 and 98, which were the first
diesel-powered automobiles in America. The father of bluegrass music,
Bill Monroe, was born in Rosine, Kentucky, in 1911, and died of a stroke
on September 9, 1996, at age 84.
- THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 14: Stan and
Lottie Backer of Ava celebrate their 66th wedding anniversary, with best
wishes from the family. Happy 78th birthday wishes to Jane Myers, a
resident of Sunset, from her family and staff at Sunset. After watching
the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in Maryland during the War of
1812, Francis Scott Key wrote the lyrics to the “Star Spangled Banner”
in 1814. He is buried in a cemetery in Rome, NY. Most of us know him as
“The Lone Ranger.” Clayton Moore was born today in Chicago, Illinois, in
1914. He died of a heart attack in Calabases, California, on December
28, 1999, at the age of 85.
- FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 15:
Congratulations to Steven and Elizabeth Fox of Talcottville on the birth
last night of a son, Emmett Paul Fox, with best wishes from their
families. Happy 50th anniversary to Ernie and Carol Mayer of Utica, from
their Boonville family. Two young ladies celebrate their 90th birthdays
today. Marge Smith of Lee Center and Nellie Swan of Glendale. Marge’s
birthday actually is Saturday, with best wishes to both from family,
friends, and neighbors. In weather history, it was September 16, 1986,
when rain and 35 degrees changed to snow on Jackson Hill at 3 a.m. Also,
Lake Placid measured 1-inch of snow, and Ray Brook, 5 inches in the
Adirondacks. There were also snowflakes in the air at 8:20 a.m. on the
Spencer Road in Boonville. in 1999, the remnants of Hurricane Floyd
entered New York State, and by September 17, Jackson Hill measured 3.24
inches of rain. Foliage color is now more noticeable in the Boonville
area, with fall officially arriving at 12:03 a.m. on September 23.
