George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of September 4th, 2006:
- MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 4: (LABOR DAY)
- TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5: Happy 47th
wedding anniversary wishes to Dale and Barb Ferris of the Hogsback Road
from Rich, Laurie and their family. On Saturday, Barney and Bobbie
Deshaies of Boonville celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary, with
best wishes from their family. Alex Kilb, a resident of Sunset Nursing
and Rehabilitation Center in Boonville, celebrates his 89th birthday,
with love from his wife Belle, and his friends in Forestport and Sunset.
Singer-songwriter John Stewart, longtime lead singer of the Kingston
Trio folk group, was born in San Diego, California, 67 years ago.
Comedian Bob Newhart was born in Chicago, Illinois, 77 years ago. On
September 4, 1957, Ford Motor Company introduced a new car called the “Edsel,”
but only three years later, the car was discontinued due to poor sales.
In 1997, the last Ford Thunderbird came off the assembly line in Lorain,
Ohio. The car was re-designed and produced again in 2002.
- WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 6: Tom and
Leona Ortlib of Martinsburg celebrate their 48th wedding anniversary
today, with best wishes from son Jeff. Thanks to the NYS Department of
Transportation for painting the white lines on the edge of Route 12D. It
helps to guide me to the station at 4:35 a.m. every morning, especially
on foggy mornings. Joanne Worley appeared on the “Laugh-In” TV Series
and was born 69 years ago in Lowell, Iowa. Roger Waters of the rock
group “Pink Floyd” is 63 today. The first self-serve grocery store,
“Piggly Wiggly” opened to the public in Memphis, Tennessee, in 1916.
Five years ago, Barry Bonds, became the fifth player in baseball history
to hit 60 home runs in a single season.
- THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7: Some
foliage color change is starting to occur on Route 46, the Gorge Road,
but very little around Boonville. Apparently, our erratic summer weather
has affected tomatoes growing this year. Almost everyone I have talked
to are reporting a less than great crop this year. Sweetcorn, which is
in abundance, is juicy and sweet as usual. For some reason, Hummingbirds
seemed to be in smaller numbers also. The National Professional Football
Hall of Fame was dedicated today in Canton, Ohio, in 1963. One of the
earliest inductees into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland,
Buddy Holly, was born in Lubbock, Texas in 1936. A mistake on the
spelling of his name on his first record, created the last name, and he
then went by Holly. I started to back my truck into the garage last
night, then stopped when I detected something moving in the dark, and
discovered a large black skunk. I left the truck out! Chrysler
Corporation introduced a new compact car, the Neon, on this day in 1993.
- FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 8: The first of
79 episodes of the TV series “Star Trek” on NBC aired tonight in 1966
and continued for three years. Cartoonist Chic Young created the comi
strip “Blondie” in 1930. Dogwood is still married to her. Comedian Sid
Caesar was born in Yonkers, New York, 84 years ago. Country music legend
Patsey Cline was born in Winchester, Virginia, in 1932. Her birthname
was Virginia Patterson Hensley. She was killed in a plane crash in
Camden, Tennessee, in 1963, along with Cowboy Copas and Hawkshaw
Hawkins.
