George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of September 3rd, 2007:
- MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 3: LABOR DAY
HOLIDAY.
- TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 4: I received
a call to congratulate Bruce Clark and Wanda Mooney on their wedding
Sunday at their Port Leyden home, from friends Shirley and Bill. History
shows us that George Eastman received a patent for his camera in 1888,
and “Kodak” was the trademark name. Ford Motor Company introduced the
“Edsel” in 1957 after five years of planning. The car was in production
for only three years before the plug was pulled. Forty years later to
the day in1997, Ford discontinued the T-Bird with the last one rolling
off the Lorain, Ohio, assembly line. Years later, the T-Bird was
re-introduced one more time and then discontinued.
- WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 5: Happy
43rd anniversary wishes to Lansing and Judy Boutwell of North Carolina,
who are visiting in Boonville, from all her sisters and mom. Onlookers
over in the Greig area are watching a mamma bear and her four cubs the
past several weeks. They have been spotted between the Pine Grove and
Glenfield-Greig Roads. It seems unusual that four cubs were born, with
only one or two the normal. Happy 58th anniversary wishes to Pete and
Ollie Hawes of Ava. Comedian-actor Bob Newhart was born in Chicago 78
years ago. Also born in Chicago is actress-model Raquel Welch who’s 67
today.
- THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 6: Happy 49th
anniversary wishes to Tom and Leona Ortlieb, from Jeffrey. Bob and
Ruthann Earl of Turin celebrate their 36th anniversary, with best wishes
from all her sisters and mom. There’s now new signs placed on the former
Eckerd Pharmacy. Yesterday, the new Rite Aid signs were put into place.
Several country music singers have birthdays today, including Mel
McDaniel (65), David Allan Coe (68), Sylvia (50), comedian Jeff
Foxworthy (49), and Mark Chesnutt (44). A strange weather event occurred
in 1981. Forest fires in Michigan created smoke, which turned the skies
yellow. This huge fire burned 20 villages, killed 200 people, and caused
$2.3 million in damage to the state.
- FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 7: We may see
temperature records broken today as high 80s are forecast. Even with the
dry weather, Ken Stabb, superintendent of the Boonville Municipal
Commission reports that Boonville’s water supply is in good shape. The
aquifer is down about 12 inches, which is typical of mid-winter
measurements. In 1998, a fast-moving cluster of thunderstorms moved
across Upstate NY, producing winds of 80 to 90 mph. A tornado watch was
issued by the National Weather Service that day. The storms struck the
NYS Fair in Syracuse, where two campers were killed by lightning.
Boonville picked up .41 inches of rain. In 2002 on tonight’s date, the
Northern Lights were dancing in the sky. Rock and Roll pioneer, Buddy
Holly, was born in Lubbock, Texas, in 1936, and was killed in plane
crash on February 3, 1959, at the age of 22.
