The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of August 28th, 2006:
- MONDAY, AUGUST 28: Back from
vacation in Maine last week. Monday and Tuesday were the best weather
days. The ocean water temperature was the high of the summer at 63
degrees. It didn’t feel warm to me. On Wednesday, all swimmers had to be
removed from the water at York Beach after sharks were sighted, and by
Thursday it was back to normal. Locals told me that shark sightings only
occur about one in five years. A note in the station mailbox asked to me
to congratulate Andy and Mindy Maciejko on their marriage on Friday,
August 25, with best wishes from both families. I was happy to read in
the Herald that an attendance record was set by the Woodsmen’s Field
Days last weekend. Laurie and I are volunteer photographers for the many
events. Laurie was lucky enough to buy the winning ticket for a new
Stihl Magnum chain saw being raffled by the NYS Timbermen’s Association,
with proceeds going to Children’s Hospital services in the area. I
haven’t had any pine cones on my trees for two years, but this year may
make up for it, as there appears to be thousands in most pine trees this
year.
- TUESDAY, AUGUST 29:
Congratulations to Rob and Colleen (Callaghan) Kirkland of Prospect on
the birth of twins, August 10, named Benjamin Joseph and Morgan
Elizabeth. They join big brother Marcus at home. Colleen is the daughter
of Steve and Jeanne Callaghan of Port Leyden. Pop singer Michael Jackson
was born in Gary, Indiana, in 1958.
- WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 30:
Congratulations to Kelly Howard and Shawn Buchanan of Rome on the birth
yesterday of a daughter, Alea Rose. Kelly is formerly from Hawkinsville,
and the baby was born on her mom, Lou Howard’s birthday. Bernie and Lou
are first-time grandparents. Also, congratulations to Jason and Lisa
Overton on the birth of a daughter, Aubrey Sage, born yesterday at
Carthage Area Hospital. Lisa is the former Lisa Schneider of East Road,
Boonville.
- THURSDAY, AUGUST 31: Happy 38th
wedding anniversary wishes to Bill and Sandy Miller of Forestport, from
their family and friends. Forecasters are all watching weather trends as
rain is expected this weekend because of the unstable weather coming up
the coast. Last year, the effects of Hurricane Katrina brought heavy
rain with 3.01” measured in Boonville, plus another 1.29” in two days.
- FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 1: Happy 50th
wedding anniversary to Mike and Phyllis Pelo of Lowville from Mark,
Bonnie, and the kids. Conway Twitty appeared at the Boonville-Oneida
County Fair in 1969 and today would have been his birthday. He was born
in Friars Point, Mississippi, in 1933, and died of an abdominal aneurysm
June 5, 1993, at the age of 59. In 1989, the federal government passed
legislation requiring all new cars to be equipped with driver’s side air
bags.
