George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of August 27th, 2007:
- MONDAY, AUGUST 27: Happy
anniversary wishes to Jim and Ann Brown of Lyons Falls on their 19th,
from son Bill. Visitors to Boonville should take notice of the progress
being made on the construction of the canal boat across from the Erwin
Park on Route 12. Ed Fynmore of Boonville, who has headed up the
project, stated that the Canal Scow was built from plans from the NYS
Museum in Albany, and is a down-sized version of the boats that were
used on the Erie Canal. Those boats averaged 72 feet with a width of 14
feet. Ed said they hope to have the project completed before winter, and
have the living quarters and roof installed soon. Also on Route 12,
Boonville, the Boonville Elks Lodge is proud of the new sign that was
installed on Sunday (see photos on Page 11.) The original sign was
destroyed by high winds several springs ago. Laurie Capron of Boonville
volunteered to construct a new sign, and after six weeks of work on her
dining room table, the sign was finished. Thanks to Lynn Denslow and Tom
“Taz” Randall, both Elks’ members, the sign was lifted into place on
Sunday.
- TUESDAY, AUGUST 28: Happy 95th
birthday wishes go out to Anna Widrick of Croghan, from her family and
friends. Margaret Bailey of Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation in
Boonville celebrates her 80th birthday today, with best wishes from her
family. A back bear was spotted over on Valley View Drive on Saturday.
Walkers might like to travel in a different direction. I could see the
Lunar Eclipse from the radio station at 5:30 a.m. this morning, as the
sky was mostly clear. Erwin Park has had little use the past several
weeks. Perhaps, because of the pool being closed, people are assuming
that the park itself is closed also. In reality, everything is open but
the pool. In 1907, the American Messenger Company of Seattle, WA, was
founded and eventually was renamed United Parcel Service. The first
American born Saint, Mother Elizabeth Ann Seton, was born in New York
City in 1774.
- WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 29: Happy 43rd
anniversary wishes to Joyce Mealus of Brantingham, from husband Jim.
Violet Hanno of the Lowville area celebrates her 90th birthday, with
best wishes from her friends. The most destructive hurricane ever to hit
the U.S., Katrina, made landfall today near New Orleans in 2005. After
eight days in space in 1965, astronauts Gordon Cooper and Charles “Pete”
Conrad, aboard Gemini 5, splashed into the Atlantic Ocean, ending a
successful trip. The Beatles ended their fourth American tour in 1966 in
Candlestick Park, San Francisco. That event was their last public
concert.
- THURSDAY, AUGUST 30:
Congratulations to Shawn Olsen and Buffy Stinebrickner of Rome on the
birth of a daughter, Cloey Annabelle, born last evening. Best wishes
from Chris Stinebrickner and family from West Leyden. Doug and Millie
Krambuhl of Boonville observe their 60th wedding anniversary today, with
congratulations from their family. Ten years ago, reports reached the
U.S. of the death of Princess Diana, who was killed in a car crash in
Paris. Nine years ago, actor Glenn Ford died in Beverly Hills,
California, at the age of 90. Long-time country singer Kitty Wells was
born in Nashville 88 years ago.
- FRIDAY, AUGUST 31: Happy 60th
wedding anniversary to Ralph and Martha Drelick of the Rector Road from
their 11 children, 36 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. Happy
50th wedding anniversary wishes are extended to Bernard and Jane Berrus
of Lowville, and also to Glenn and Barbara Wilcox on their 50th wedding
anniversary from their families.
