George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of August 25th, 2008:

  • MONDAY, AUGUST 25: For the second weekend in a row, beautiful weather was enjoyed with a high temperature of 80 in the village, and light rain, thunder and lightning last evening. I measured .37 inches of rain this morning at the station. Happy 29th anniversary wishes to Jim Denslow of Boonville from his wife Judy. Marj Bookhagen of Glenfield celebrates her 83rd birthday, with best wishes from Craig, Amy, and family. Actor Sean Connery was born in Edinburgh, Scotland, 78 years ago. He was my favorite James Bond.

  • TUESDAY, AUGUST 26: A chilly morning greeted us with a 39-degree reading, and I had one report of frost on her tomatoes. As usual, a few trees are starting to show early color, as the daylight hours decline. We’ve lost one hour of evening daylight since the latest sunset. The very first Ford Edsel was built today in 1957. The car was only around for three years before production stopped because of poor sales. Ford reported that 110,847 cars were produced. The first Yugo automobile was introduced in America in 1985. The Yugoslavian built car was only produced for a few years before the company went bankrupt.

  • WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 27: Two births were reported this morning. Yesterday at Fort Levenworth, Kansas, Sgt. Timothy and Brittany Mayer welcomed their first born, a son, Zackery, into the world. Congratulations from Tim’s mom and dad, Gary and Debbie Mayer of Boonville. Also, Kyle and Heather LeVan of Constableville welcomed a son, Varick James, born on Friday. Happy wishes from their families. Historically, the world’s first successful oil well was established near Titusville, PA, in 1859. Edwin Drake struck oil at 69 feet.

  • THURSDAY, AUGUST 28: I had a note to wish their mother, Anna Widrick, a happy 96th birthday from Royal and Arlene in Carthage. Happy 26th anniversary wishes to Floyd and Maryann Miller of Boonville, from Ron, Angie, Clayton, and Mallory. Singer Shania Twain was born in Windsor, Ontario, and was raised in Timmins, 43 years ago today. Her real name is Eileen Regina Edwards. Singer LeAnn Rimes was born in Jackson, Mississippi, 26 years ago today. At the age of 13, she had a Top Ten hit song with “Blue,” and has since recorded close to 30 singles. Her new song is called “What I Cannot Change,” which she had a part in writing. The new Farmers Almanac predicts a colder and snowy winter this year. Last year, Boonville totaled 196.9 inches of snowfall and the average of the past 58 years is 211.07 inches.

  • FRIDAY, AUGUST 29: Long distance congratulations to Royce Fitzgerald, formerly of Port Leyden, and Sharon Bergeron, who will be married in Massachusetts on Monday. Best wishes from the Fitzgerald family. Happy 44th anniversary wishes to Joyce Mealus of Brantingham from husband Jim. Mrs. Clinton “Violet” Hanno of Lowville celebrated her 91st birthday today, with family and friends sending their best wishes.
