George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of August 20th, 2007:
- MONDAY, AUGUST 20: Friday
evening’s fireworks by Majestic Fireworks were some of the best ever
presented in Boonville, according to all reports. The Woodsmen’s should
be commended for the successful weekend. I’m sure attendance records
were broken with perfect weather Saturday and Sunday. The 300-plus
volunteers it takes to present the activities did a great job. A
Japanese film company was on hand to record the various events. It would
be nice to see the end result of their visit. Rain is what we need to
rejuvenate the water wells around the area. Since August 1, Boonville
has received 1.65 inches of rain, compared to last year’s 3.16 inches
for the same period. If you own a 1963 Ford Thunderbird, you might like
to know that the first model came off the assembly line today in 1962.
- TUESDAY, AUGUST 21: Happy
Birthday to Margaret Walters of Boonville, who celebrates her 81st
today, from her family. President Eisenhower signed an order proclaiming
Hawaii as our 50th state in 1959. Singer Kenny Rogers was born Kenneth
Donald Rogers, 69 years ago, in Houston, Texas. Yesterday’s low
temperature of 43 degrees at the Merry Hill Weather Station, Boonville,
was the lowest reading there on this day in 30 years.
- WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 22: We were
happy to receive a report from the NYS Woodsmen’s office that attendance
records were broken this past weekend, with 35,365 attending the Field
Days. The Boonville Police and Auxiliary did a great job keeping traffic
flowing smoothly. Has anyone noticed that the parking lots around the
Boonville Elks Lodge on Route 12 have been expanded, thanks to many
members who volunteered their time and equipment. The results are
impressive. Mike Maggalino at Mahaffy’s Barbershop in Boonville had an
unlikely visitor on Saturday. A small fox found his way to the shop.
They managed to confine the scared little fox in a hallway until an
animal handler arrived and removed him, and then released him in a more
familiar environment.
- THURSDAY, AUGUST 23: Tom and
Beulah Beller of the Carthage-Naumberg Road celebrate their 56th
anniversary, with best wishes from family and friends. Jeff and Kathy
Graver of West Leyden observe their 32nd anniversary today. You’ll find
Jeff at Adirondack Music, and Kathy at the Boonville Area Chamber of
Commerce office downtown. Twins, Royal Kraeger of Constableville and
Michael of Poland, celebrate their birthday today, with best wishes from
their family and friends. Thanks to the Internet, I have finally figured
out what that pesky, allergy-causing ragweed looks like. We have several
growing under our Route 12-D mailbox. They are 12 to 14 inches tall with
spiky shaped branches containing yellow flowers. They appear at the same
time as the goldenrod plants. Berry pickers are reporting a dismal crop
of blackberries because of all the dry weather.
- FRIDAY, AUGUST 24: Two Boonville
couples celebrate their 50th anniversaries today: Stewart and Shirley
Dunn, and Aubrey (Joe) and Irene Grenier both reach that milestone
number. Ralph and Linda Bush of Croghan will celebrate their 40th on
Sunday, and is also Linda’s birthday. Tomorrow, Marj Bookhagen of
Glenfield will count up 82 birthday candles, with best wishes from
Greig, Amy, Lucas and Jenna.
