George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of August 13th, 2007:

  • MONDAY, AUGUST 13: A new moon last night brought the birth of a daughter to Tim and Christy Olney of Boonville. She’s named Ashlyn Jenna, and joins two brothers and a sister at home. Cloudy skies last night prevented a good viewing of the Perseid Meteor Shower, but will be visible for a few more nights. Today’s generation enjoys cell phones as never before, but it was in 1960 when the first two-way phone conversation by satellite took place. On Saturday, we wished Ruth Hughes of Boonville a happy 93rd birthday on Sunday, with love from George and Bev Wheelock.

  • TUESDAY, AUGUST 14: Happy 55th anniversary wishes go out to Paul and Phyllis Yantzi of Lowville from former neighbors. Francis Mokrzycki of Boonville celebrates his 91st birthday today from wife Sheila and friends. Some meteor watchers reported that they counted 15 last night as they streaked across the sky. In 1935, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the Social Security Act. Four years ago, a huge power blackout occurred at 4:10 p.m., affecting 50 million people in the U.S. and Canada. It was determined that overgrown trees came into contact with power lines owned by First Energy Corporation of Ohio. The domino effect knocked out 21 power plants in three minutes, calling attention to the weakness of the nation’s aging power grid. Today is Victory Day or V-J Day commemorating President Truman’s announcement in 1945 that Japan had surrendered, ending WW II. The official ratification took place on September 2 in Toyko Bay.

  • WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 15: Congratulations to Daniel and Victoria Maher of Boonville on the birth yesterday of their third daughter, Anna Kathleen, from Mom and Dad Niemiec. Happy birthday to Bub Morczek, our weather reporting friend from Highmarket. Bub and I compare our weather numbers each morning, and he has been a faithful reporter for years. If you collect the Gold Presidential Dollars, the third of Thomas Jefferson will be available next week. The next state quarter, Wyoming, will also be available soon. The Woodstock Music and Art Fair began today in 1969 with expectations of 200,000 concert goers, but an estimated half million people crowded the site. Then on August 12, 1994, the Woodstock II music festival opened in Saugarties, NY, with a crowd of 300,000 enjoying over 50 bands and singers. Then, from July 23-25, 1999, Rome, NY, presented the next Woodstock at the Griffiss Business and Technology Park with a large attendance.

  • THURSDAY, AUGUST 16: Happy 32nd anniversary wishes to Carlton Widrick of Castorland, from wife Joan, and also observing their 32nd anniversary are Andy and Wendy Lehman of Beaver Falls, with best wishes from Carl and Joan. The king of rock and roll, Elvis Presley, died 30 years ago today at the age of 42. After five years, the last episode of the “Dukes of Hazzard,” aired tonight in 1985 and is still on Country Music Television. The very first windmill on Tug Hill was put into place today in 2005. Best remembered for portraying TV’s Davey Crockett in the 1950s, Fess Parker, a native of Fort Worth, Texas, is 83 today. Baseball legend Babe Ruth died of throat cancer in NYC in 1948. He retired in 1935 after hitting 714 home runs. Sports illustrated was published for the first time in 1954.

  • FRIDAY, AUGUST 17: Happy 39th anniversary wishes to Sharon Ventura from husband Larry. They live in Old Forge. Also 39th anniversary wishes to Jean McDougall of Lyons Falls from husband Willie. Lena Pfendler of Boonville celebrates her 91st birthday, with best wishes from her family. The American Frontiersman, Davy Crockett, was born in 1786 in Hawkins County, TN. He died while defending the Alamo on March 6, 1836.
