George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of August 11th, 2008:
- MONDAY, AUGUST 11: A severe
storm, bringing heavy rain, thunder and lightning, caused a power outage
from 6:26 a.m. to 7:17 a.m. this morning. Here at the radio station, I
measured 1.06 inches of rain from Saturday morning until 9 a.m. this
morning. However, Highmarket reported 1.70 inches from Sunday morning to
5 a.m. this morning. Happy birthday to Ruth Margot of Boonville who
celebrates her 85th year, with best wishes from her neighbors, the
Bartelottes. Two vehicles celebrate birthdays. In 1965, Ford Motor
Company introduced the Bronco, which was built for 12 years before
production ended. In 1966, Chevrolet built the first Camaro at their
facility in Norwood, Ohio, for the 1967 model year. The base price was
$2,466. A brand-new version will be available this coming year.
- TUESDAY, AUGUST 12: We wish two
young ladies very happy birthday wishes today: Helen Chizick of Port
Leyden observes her 95th today, with happy wishes from her family and
friends, and Ruth Hughes of Boonville counts up 94 candles, with best
wishes from George and Bev Wheelock. In car history, the first Ford
Model T came off the Detroit, Michigan, assembly line in 1908, and was
built until 1927. In 1963, the 1964 Thunderbird was built and was
originally designed to compete with the Corvette. After up-sizing, it
was promoted as a personal car and sold well. Country singer Porter
Wagoner was born today in 1927 and died on October 28, 2007, of lung
cancer. Also, Buck Owens was born in Sherman, Texas, in 1929 and died on
March 25, 2006, of a heart attack. Woodstock II opened today in
Saugerties, NY, in 1994 with rain, mud, and 50 bands and singers adding
to the festivities.
- WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 13: We had a
note to congratulate Troy and Heather Disotell on the birth Friday,
August 9, of a daughter, Riley Jane, born at the Lewis County General
Hospital. She weighed 5 pounds, 15 ounces, and was 19 inches long, and
is daughter number seven. Best wishes from the family. Yesterday, George
and Lucille Getman of Turin celebrated their 58th anniversary, with best
wishes from Wanda and Kayla. Happy birthday to Ken VanLuven of Boonville
on his 83rd birthday, from SaraLou, little buddy Max, and from Steve,
Michelle and family. Roger and Carolyn Maciejko of Turin celebrate their
42nd anniversary, with best wishes from Tim, Maureen and family in South
Carolina. One-time New York Yankees’ star, Mickey Mantle, died of liver
cancer in 1995. He was only 63 and received a liver transplant, but the
cancer spread to his lungs. At the time of his death, he held many World
Series records, including 18 home runs, 40 RIBs, and 42 runs.
- THURSDAY, AUGUST 14: On Tuesday,
Andy and Dawn Croniser of Woodgate became the proud parents of a
daughter, Kirsten Wava, who joins a 2-year-old brother Atlas at home.
Congratulations from the family. Happy 93rd birthday wishes to Francis
Mokrzycki of Boonville, from wife Sheila and friends. Yesterday, shortly
after 1 p.m., a lightning strike caused much damage to equipment here at
the station. The telephone repair people from Frontier were quick to
respond, to repair some problems that developed. In 1935, President
Franklin D. Roosevelt signed into law the Social Security Act. At 4:10
p.m. in 2003, a massive blackout occurred, affecting 50 million people
in the U.S. and Canada. The domino-effect failure caused 21 power plants
to shut down in 3 minutes.
- FRIDAY, AUGUST 15:
Congratulations to Scott and Charity Rupert of Castorland on the birth
last evening of a son, Remington James. He entered the world at 7
pounds, 2 ounces, with best wishes from their families. Happy 33rd
anniversary wishes to Carlton Widrick of the VanAmber Road, Castorland,
from wife Joan. The first Woodstock music festival opened today in
Saugerties, NY, in 1969. Promoters expected 200,000 spectators, but an
estimated half-million people showed up. The classic MGM movie, “The
Wizard of Oz,” opened in Hollywood today in 1939, and has been
considered a classic. On tomorrow’s date in 1977, Elvis Presley died in
Memphis, Tennessee, at the age of 42.
