George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of August 6th, 2007:
- MONDAY, AUGUST 6: Happy Birthday
to Marian Wheeler at Sunset, as she celebrates her 83rd. Her friends in
Forestport called in their best wishes. The Boonville Elks Lodge
presented their summer clambake yesterday, and everyone had a great time
with 150 tickets sold and not a single bug could be found.
- TUESDAY, AUGUST 7: Happy 31st
anniversary wishes to Mike and Elaine Cihocki of Fish Creek from Rich,
Elaine and family. In history, George Washington established the order
of the Purple Heart in 1782, recognizing enlisted men and
non-commissioned officers. The man remembered for writing and producing
Nancy Sinatra’s huge 1966 hit song, “These Boots Are Made for Walkin,”
Lee Hazelwood, died Saturday in Henderson, Nevada, from complications of
renal cancer, age 78. Early in his career, he co-wrote many of guitar
player Duane Eddy’s big hits, and recorded many duets with Nancy
Sinatra, including the 1967 version of “Jackson” and “Some Velvet
Morning.”
- WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 8: Gordon
Campany of Denmark reaches his 82nd birthday today. His sister-in-law
Ilene says he acts like a teenager. Comic strip character “Odie,”
Garfield’s sidekick, showed up in the newspapers for the first time in
1978. Actor Dustin Hoffman was born in Los Angeles, California, 70 years
ago. Singer/songwriter Mel Tillis was born in Pahokee, Florida, in 1932.
- THURSDAY, AUGUST 9: Fred and
Norma Pfendler of Jackson Hill celebrate their 56th anniversary today,
with best wishes from their children. Happy anniversary to Stanley and
Jane Jones of Talcottville on their 49th, with best wishes from their
family. Grandparents Randy and Linda Barrow send congratulations to
Branden Barrow and Leah Bedore on the birth yesterday of a daughter,
Brea Shay Barrow, at Lewis County General Hospital. Start watching the
night skies, as the annual Perseid meteor shower will be visible and
will reach a peak on August 12. Watchers may see Perseids surpassing 60
per hour the last few hours before dawn on August 12. After August 14,
about 10 per hour may be seen, as you watch toward the Northeast. The
Perseids are active from July 25 to August 18. When singer/songwriter
John Denver observed the event, it prompted him to write “Rocky Mountain
High,” mentioning “fire in the sky” after a camping trip in the Rockies.
Syracuse reached 100 degrees today in 2001, setting a record for the
highest August temperature. Boonville recorded 88 degrees that day.
- FRIDAY, AUGUST 10: Some
impressive anniversaries were called in this morning and a new baby.
First, congratulations to Chris and Chrystal Fox of Remsen. After four
daughters, they now have a son, Mitchel Christopher, born this morning
at 8 pounds, 2 ounces. Happy wishes to them, from Grandpa and Grandma
Satterly and family. Mel and Glenda Kipfer of Croghan celebrate their
61st anniversary, with best wishes from cousin Rita. Happy anniversary
to Earl and Jane Axtell of Port Leyden on their 58th anniversary, from
their children. Folk lore describes today as St. Lawrence Day. If fine
weather is found today, a good autumn can be expected. Time will tell.
He may be best remembered for his hit song, “Big John” or his
sausages...Jimmy Dean was born in Plainview, Texas, 79 years ago. Guitar
designer and manufacturer Leo Fender was born in California in 1909.
Rock and roll singer Buddy Holly was one of the first to make his
electric guitars famous. Buddy’s guitar, a Stratocaster, was sold to
Gary Busey at auction several years ago. Busey played Buddy Holly in the
movie that found him nominated for an Oscar.
