George's Tid Bits
by George Capron

The following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on the air during the week of August 4th, 2008:

  • MONDAY, AUGUST 4: At 12:51 a.m. Saturday morning, Dave and Laura Wawrzyniak of Boonville welcomed a daughter, Page Elizabeth, into the world. She is the first grandchild for Dave and Deb Wawrzyniak. Last evening, Jeffrey Hulbert and Tonya Tackett of Lowville welcomed a daughter, Aubree Jean, who will join four brothers at home. Congratulations from the White and Hulbert families. Today, Dorothy Burdick of Lyons Falls celebrates her 90th birthday, and her sister-in-law, Vera Lastowski of Boonville, celebrates her 80th birthday on Sunday, with best wishes to both from family and friends.

  • TUESDAY, AUGUST 5: President Abraham Lincoln signed into law the first federal income tax on this date in 1861 to go into effect January 1, 1862, but it was rescinded in 1872. She played the role of Jennifer on the TV series WKRP in Cincinnati, and today Loni Anderson, a native of St. Paul, Minnesota, counts 64 birthday candles.

  • WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6: This afternoon at 3:52 p.m. we reach the halfway point of summer, with fall arriving at 11:44 a.m. on Saturday, September 22. We wish a happy birthday to Marion Wheeler of Sunset Nursing Home on her 84th birthday, with happy wishes from her family. Chevrolet registered the Corvair name in 1959. This was a new rear-engine compact car. These models are considered rare and collectible, one of the most significant cars in automobile history. Richard Hollingshead Jr. first registered his patent for a drive-in movie theater today in 1932. He was granted the patent in May of 1933.

  • THURSDAY, AUGUST 7: We’ve had another two-week period of unsettled weather. Last evening around 10 p.m. another thunder, lightning and rain storm invaded the area. I recorded an 18 mph wind at 10:01 p.m., which toppled a tree across a roadway, requiring the fire department to respond. The village rain measurement was .38 inches. Today, David Moselle of Lowville celebrates his 80th birthday, with love from his family. The pop group, the Bee Gees, enjoyed their first number one song in America, “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart,” in 1971. They recorded eight more number one songs. Only the Beatles and the Supremes scored more chart topping hits. The first picture of the earth from space was transmitted by the Explorer VI Satellite in 1959.

  • FRIDAY, AUGUST 8: Happy birthday to Gordy Campany of Denmark, who celebrates his 82nd birthday. His sister-in-law Eileen says he doesn’t put as many miles on his bicycle as he once did. Another rainstorm arrived yesterday in Boonville, with small hailstones falling on Merry Hill at 1 p.m. We’ve had measurable rain six out of the last eight days and often with thunder and lightning. The TV series, “Night Rider,” aired its last episode tonight in 1986. David Hasselhoff and his talking car, Kitt,” a Pontiac Firebird, had starring roles. David went on to star in Bay Watch for many more seasons.
