George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of July 30th, 2007:
- MONDAY, JULY 30: We had a
beautiful vacation in Colorado, and thanks to son Chris and René for
being our tour guides as we traveled 1,500 miles around the state.
Today, Ronald and Margaret Dolan of Copenhagen celebrate their 41st
anniversary. Dan and Lori Czepiel of Boonville observe their 24th
anniversary, with best wishes from Mom and Butch. It was seven years ago
last night when a severe thunder and lightning storm, with 1.6 inches of
rain, cancelled the Lorrie Morgan concert at the Boonville Fair. In
1965, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed into law the Medicare bill,
which went into effect in 1966. The Saturn Corporation announced today
in 1985 that they would build their first car production plant in Spring
Hill, TN. The first car rolled off the assembly line in 1990.
- TUESDAY, JULY 31: I received two
reports of an earthquake last evening shortly after 11 p.m. in Clinton
County, but I can’t confirm them. There was an earthquake in 1997 at
3:10 a.m., centered in the Western Adirondacks with a magnitude of 3,
but wasn’t felt in this area. Happy 88th birthday wishes to Beulah
Kelsey of Kortenaer Village, from her friends and family. Marion Forney
of Carthage celebrates her 85th birthday today, with best wishes from
Squeaky.
- WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 1: I had seven
family members call to wish Gordon Post of Lyons Falls a happy 80th
birthday today. In 2005, the National Weather Service issued a tornado
warning that evening and an F-1 rated tornado did touch down on the
Salmon River near Montague with some tree damage. In 1971, a new TV show
premiered, named “The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour,” which aired for
several years. In 1973, the blockbuster movie, “American Graffiti,”
opened in Los Angeles, CA, sometimes called the grandaddy of crusin’
movies of teenage life in the ’60s. New York State issued their first
license plates in 1910.
- THURSDAY, AUGUST 2: Happy 40th
anniversary wishes to Roy and Marge Bookhagen of Glenfield from Craig,
Amy, Lucas, and Jenna. Leola Schmelzle of Forestport counts up 88
birthday candles today, with best wishes from her family. A big thank
you to Brian Sweeney of West Leyden who sent over to the radio station a
large puffball mushroom, 30 inches in circumference. I have several
friends I will share it with. It seems to be an early arrival, with fast
growth usually found after several light rains. The man who developed
the cable cars in San Francisco tested his first model today. Inventor
Andrew S. Hallidie conducted the first test in 1873 and they are still
in use today.
- FRIDAY, AUGUST 3: Ken and Mildred
Webster of Port Leyden observe their 61st anniversary today, with best
wishes from their family. Today, Pat and Lolly Kotary of Boonville
celebrate their 50th anniversary, with love from their family. Also
celebrating their 50th is Larry and Ann Lash. Congratulations from B and
T. Tomorrow, Dorothy Burdick of Lyons Falls will find 89 candles on her
birthday cake, according to Rick and Nancy. In 1958, the U.S. nuclear
submarine, the Nautilus, traveled nearly a 1,000 miles from Point
Barrow, Alaska, to the North Pole, reaching the top of the world. The
sub was de-commissioned March 3,1980, and was then put on exhibit in
1986 at the Submarine Force Museum in Groton, Connecticut.
