The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of July 28th, 2008:
- MONDAY, JULY 28: This past week
brought a good share of rain. The Merry Hill Weather Station reported
that from last Sunday to this morning, 3.42 inches of rain has been
measured. On yesterday’s date in 1904, the very first Buick was sold to
a doctor in Flint, Michigan, then on July 29, 1909, Buick Motor Company
acquired the Cadillac Motor Company for General Motors. On this day in
1945, a military plane crashed into the Empire State building in dense
fog. The plane hit the 79th floor and 14 people were killed. Earl S.
Tupper, inventor of Tupperware, was born in 1907.
- TUESDAY, JULY 29: Happy 30th
anniversary wishes to Kevin and Vicki Meyer of Castorland from their
family and friends. The Dixie Chicks numbers are expanding. Fiddler
Martie McQuire and husband Gareth welcomed a daughter last Friday in
Austin, Texas, who will join twin sisters at home. Member of the group,
Emily Robinson, also has twins and a son, and Natalie Maines has two
children.
- WEDNESDAY, JULY 30: Ronald and
Margaret Dolan of Copenhagen celebrate their 42nd anniversary today.
Historically, in 1965, President Johnson signed into law Medicare, a
health insurance program for the elderly. It was today in 1985 when
Saturn Corporation announced plans to build the first car plant in
Spring Hill, Tennessee. Their first car was built in 1990 and many
models are still produced. The last “classic” Volkswagen Beetle was
built in Pueblo, Mexico, today in 2003 and was sent to a museum in
Wolfsburg, Germany, the headquarters for Volkswagen. Singer Kenny
Chesney is the first guest artist announced for the September 20 Farm
Aid Concert to be held at Mansfield, MA. The first concert, organized by
Willie Nelson, was held in 1985, and called attention to the problems
facing America’s agriculture industry.
- THURSDAY, JULY 31: Happy 60th
anniversary wishes to Millard and Ann Boek of Westernville from Bob and
Kathy, Eric and Leah, and Stacie and Greg. Margaret Knobalonnick of
Deferiet counts up 89 birthday candles, and Marion Forney of Carthage
celebrates her 86th birthday with best wishes from Squeaky. Beaulah
Kelsey at Sunset will celebrate her 88th birthday from her longtime
friends. In 1997, an earthquake with a magnitude of 3 rattled the
western Adirondacks at 3:10 a.m. The Village of Boonville Street
Department has been busy elevating street water catch basins on East
Schuyler Street between Rite Aid and the American Legion in preparation
of street paving after the Woodsmen’s Field Days.
- FRIDAY, AUGUST 1: Received an
e-mail to congratulate Jason and Julie Moser of Croghan on the arrival
of a baby girl. Clairissa Anne was born Sunday, July 27, weighing 9
pounds, 3 ounces, with best wishes from Jane and Shirley. Tomorrow, Roy
and Marj Bookhagen of Glenfield will celebrate their 41st anniversary,
with best wishes from Craig, Amy, Lucas, and Jenna. It was this evening
in 2005 when a tornado warning was issued by the Tug Hill region. An F-1
rated tornado did strike down on the Salmon River Road in Montague,
knocking down many trees, but there were no injuries. One of the best
cruise-in movies ever filmed, American Graffiti, opened in Los Angeles
in 1973. the Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour made their debut tonight in
1971, and was an instant hit and ran for several seasons until they
divorced in 1975.
