George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of July 23rd, 2006:
- MONDAY, JULY 23: It appears that
rocks grow in some locations, as was evident on Route 12, south of
Boonville, at the end of last week. A huge rock started to rise in the
southbound lane, requiring the New York State Department. of
Transportation to block off that lane and extricate the troublesome
stone. Bystanders said the rock was as large as a bed of a pick-up truck
with some vehicles becoming air-borne before it was removed. Remember
the TV show “Laugh-In” back in the ’60s? Ruth Buzzi, one of the cast
members, celebrates her 70th birthday today. Ruth is a native of
Westerly, RI. TVs “Wonder Woman,” Linda Carter, was born in Phoenix, AZ,
in 1951. We had a picnic at Pixley Falls State Park on the Gorge with
son Dan and his wife Susan last evening. It’s a beautiful little park
with an impressive waterfall. It was running full bore, and there were
no bugs.
- TUESDAY, JULY 24: Last night Dick
LeClar and I MC’ed the Boonville Fair parade and it was the largest in
memory, with 90 units in line, with an ending time of 9 p.m. In weather
history, it was at 7:21 p.m. this evening in 1996 when rain and high
winds struck the Village of Boonville. The wind did roof damage to The
Pub, Capri Pizzeria, and the car wash on Route 12. The winds also
knocked down a tent on the lawn of the Dodge-Pratt-Northam Art and
Community Center. Celebrating her 83rd birthday today is Estelle Getty
from the “Golden Girls” TV series. Estelle is a native of New York, NY.
Canadian singer Anne Murray’s first country song “Snowbird,” started up
the charts in 1970 and has become her signature song, selling over a
million copies. She has charted over 50 songs on the country hit lists.
Country singer Charlie Rich died of a blood clot at the age of 62 in
Hammond, Louisiana, in 1995.
- WEDNESDAY, JULY 25: An amazing
thunder and lightning storm went through the area last evening at 4.50
p.m. yesterday afternoon. Hailstones the size of pennies were observed
in Highmarket. It only lasted a few minutes, but flattened many gardens.
Exactly 1 inch of rain was measured there and only .11 in the village.
We lucked out again. Folklore dictates that today is St. Anne’s Day,
which means if it rains on this day, it will continue for a month and
one week. Cowboy actor-singer Gene Autry was sworn into the Army Air
Corps during his radio show in 1942. He served as an officer until 1945.
He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1969 and died at
the age of 91, on October 2, 1998. Rock and roller Mick Jagger, of the
Rolling Stones, was born in Dartford, England, 63 year’s ago. Country
singer Jeannie C. Riley recorded her most famous song for Plantation
Records, “Harper Valley PTA,” in 1968. She performed at the
Boonville-Oneida County Fair in 1973 and again in 1984.
- THURSDAY, JULY 26: Happy 38th
wedding anniversary wishes to Bob and Kathy Dustin of Boonville from mom
Charbonneau and family. Clayton Nellenback of Ava celebrates his 84th
birthday today, with best wishes from Dorothy Nellenback. In car
history, the first Buick automobile was sold to Dr. Herbert Hills of
Flint, Michigan, in 1904. Cartoon character “Bugs Bunny” first showed up
in a movie, “A Wild Hare,” in 1940. Former country singer Bobbie Gentry
was born in Chicksaw County, Mississippi, 62 years ago, and is
remembered for her huge hit, the million selling “Ode to Billy Joe,” in
1967. She won the Grammy Award for the best new artist that same year.
- FRIDAY, JULY 27: A card in the
mailbox offers congratulations to Patrick Marino and Rebecca Allen on
their wedding tomorrow in Watertown, from Doug, Sue, Jimmy and Shawna. A
U.S. Army B-25 Bomber struck the Empire State Building in New York City
in 1945 in heavy fog. Eleven people in the building and three in the
airplane were killed, and $1 million in damage was reported, as the
impact on the 79th floor blew a hole in the building 18’ by 20’. Elvis
Presley’s second number one song, “I Want You, I Need You, I Love You,”
topped the charts in 1956. Sally Struthers, from the TV series, “All In
The Family,” was born in Portland, Oregon, 58 years ago. Cartoonist Jim
Davis, who brings us “Garfield,” is 61 today. “Garfield” celebrated his
28th birthday on June 19.
