George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of July 21st, 2008:
- MONDAY, JULY 21: Happy belated
anniversary wishes to Harold and Betty Haig of the Spencer Road,
Boonville. Saturday was their 56th anniversary. Congratulations from
Dave, Howie, Linda, Frank, Mike, and Jessica. Today, Tom and Eleanor
Hoskins of Lyons Falls reach their 48th anniversary, with love from
Linda and Jeff. A note in our mailbox said to congratulate Andy and
Mindy on the birth Saturday of a daughter, Laurel Mindy Maciejko, who
will join big brother Aiden at home. Actor-comedian Robin Williams was
born in Chicago 57 years ago. Singer-songwriter Cat Stevens was born in
London, England, in 1948.
- TUESDAY, JULY 22: It was
beautiful last evening for the Boonville Fair Parade with 74 units in
the line-up. Charlie Mahaffy and I emceed the event. Five years ago the
parade was cancelled because of lightning and heavy rain. I measured
1.22 inches of rain in the village the next morning. In 2000, an earth
tremor was felt at 10 in the morning with many phone calls coming in
from the Hawkinsville and Potato Hill areas. Actor Orson Bean was born
in Burlington, Vermont, 80 years ago. He is remembered for his role in
the TV series, “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman.”
- WEDNESDAY, JULY 23: It was a
special day here at WBRV in 1955. At noon on Saturday, July 23, WBRV AM
held an open house commemorating Boonville’s new radio station, which
signed on the air on July 25. A very strong wind moved through Central
New York this morning. The National Weather Service issued a tornado
warning for northern Onondaga County at 4 a.m., but none were reported.
Here in Boonville, we didn’t record any strong winds, but rain and
lightning was prevalent. From Ava to Rome and from Lee Center to Camden,
electric service was disrupted to over 4,000 customers. In Onondaga
County, about 1,000 customers lost power. Bluegrass singer Alison Krauss
was born in Decatur, Illinois, on this date in 1971. She joined the
Grand Ole Opry in 1993 and has won more Grammy awards than any other
woman in history.
- THURSDAY, JULY 24:
Congratulations to Jeremy Sullivan and Sara Rounds on the birth of a
daughter, Arlanna Elizabeth, with best wishes from the Sullivan family
in Constableville. Happy wishes to Kenneth and AnnaMae Patrick of
Castorland on their 43rd anniversary, from Missy, Kevin and Noah. This
was the second day of the Woodstock Rome Festival at Griffiss Business
and Technology Park in 1999, which ran from July 23 to July 25. Ruth
Buzzi, a regular on Ronan and Martin’s Laugh-In TV series, was born in
Westerly, RI, 72 years ago. TV’s “Wonder Woman,” Lynda Carter, was born
in Phoenix, Arizona, in 1951.
- FRIDAY, JULY 25: Congratulations
to Ryan and Megan Morrisson of Lyons Falls on the birth yesterday of a
son, Maddox David Gydesen Morrisson, who has a big brother Marek at
home. Congratulations from both families. Yesterday afternoon, between
2:30 and 3 p.m., a nasty cell of violent weather tracked just south of
the village. Hail stones that were 1-inch in diameter covered the ground
in Hawkinsville, destroyed gardens and flower beds, and knocked down six
trees and stripped the leaves off many others. Here at the radio station
I recorded 1.18 inches of rain with an 18 mph wind peak at 2:59 p.m.
Rick Beyer of the Rector Road, west of Lowville, had a wind gust of 57
mph at 3:08 p.m. and measured 1.21 inches of rain. Our WBRV 900 AM
station signed on today in 1955. At 7:21 p.m. this evening in 1996,
heavy rain and winds up to 52 mph roared into Boonville. The Pub, Capri
Pizzeria, and the car wash had considerable roof damage, with wires
dropping across Route 12, backing up traffic for miles. The wind also
collapsed a tent on the side lawn of the Dodge-Pratt-Northam Art and
Community Center on Schuyler Street.
