following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of July 10th, 2006:
- MONDAY, JULY 10: Congratulations
to Jay and Christine Flansburg of Boonville on the arrival of their
daughter, Emma Ann, on Saturday. Emma weighed in at 7 pounds. 2 ounces,
with best wishes from Grandpa. Legendary TV newsman David Brinkley was
born today in 1920 in Wilmington, North Carolina, and died Wednesday,
June 11, 2003, from complications of a fall at his home in Houston
Texas. Country music singer Johnny Cash recorded one of his best-known
songs, "Sunday Morning Coming Down,” in 1970. Yesterday, actor Tom
Hanks, a native of Concord, California, celebrated his 50th birthday. We
had a report that film crews from NBC News were up in the wind farm area
on Tug Hill and are putting together a news program that will be aired
sometime in the future.
- TUESDAY, JULY 11: With a full
moon last night, a daughter, Kylie Vixen, was born to Derek and Jamie
Burke of Lowville, with best wishes from the Greenfields across the
street. Dale and Marlene Swanger of Boonville celebrate their 50th
wedding anniversary, with best wishes from Doug, Steph, James and
Zackery. Happy 45th anniversary wishes to Jerry and Shirley Hutchins of
Boonville from their family. The 82-ton space craft, “Skylab,”
re-entered the earth’s atmosphere today in 1979, amid speculation that
pieces would strike people on earth, but it broke apart over the Indian
Ocean and Australia and no one was injured. The 50s’ heartthrob singer
and actor, Tab Hunter, was born in New York 75 years ago. You may
remember his huge hit, “Young Love.” Former Boxer, Leon Spinks, was born
in St. Lois, MO, in 1953. A small tornado touched down at North Lake
near Forestport today in 1984, causing some tree damage. Hailstones an
inch and a half in diameter fell from the sky, along with 57 mph winds
in Boonville in 1989.
- WEDNESDAY, JULY 12: We celebrate
two impressive birthdays today. Peter Krywosa of Talcottville is 93
today, from his family. And, Edith Lasher is also 93, with best wishes
from Henry and Mary Mills in Deland, Florida, and their North Country
friends. One of the early televisions best-known comedians, Milton Berle,
was born today in New York in 1908. Comedian/actor Bill Cosby was born
in Philadelphia, PA, 69 years ago. A long-time member of the pop group
“Fleetwood Mac,” Christine McVie, celebrates her 63rd birthday. She’s a
native of Birmingham, England. Longtime rockers, “The Rolling Stones,”
gave their public performance at the Marquee Club in London in 1962.
Pianist Van Cliburn was born 72 years ago in Shreveport, LA.
- THURSDAY, JULY 13: We reported
some heavy rain yesterday. The National Weather Service office at
Hancock Field in Syracuse measured 4.29 inches, Merry Hill in Boonville
2.57 inches, and 1.82 inches in the village. The next four days will
find temperatures near 90 degrees. My sister Dianne saw the Boonville
Fair picture featured in the Trainor’s Funeral ad in this past week’s
issue of the Boonville Herald, and identified her and me riding on a
kiddy ride with our mother standing at the far right. The photo had been
from the early 1950s. It was this day in 1985 when the “Live Aid”
concert was held to raise money for the famine relief for Africa. The
concert was broadcast in 110 nations, watched by a billion people, and
raised $125 million. Actor Harrison Ford was born in Chicago, IL, 64
years ago. Singer-guitarist, Roger McGuinn, of the 60s group the “Byrds,”
was born in Chicago, IL, 64 years ago. The opening guitar of their hit,
“Mr. Tambourine Man,” belongs to Roger.
- FRIDAY, JULY 14: Happy 86th
birthday to Mildred Fruin of Port Leyden from all of her friends.
Longtime NBC newsman, John Chancellor was born today in Chicago, IL, in
1927 and died on July 12, 1996, at age 68. Our 38th U.S. President,
Gerald Rudolph Ford in 93 today. He is a native of Omaha, NE.
