George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of July 9th, 2007:
- MONDAY, JULY 9: A severe
thunderstorm took out electric power for all of the Boonville area from
4:18 a.m. to 6:53 a.m. with 1.01. of rain measured here. A report said a
National Grid power pole north of Boonville on Route 12 near Fowler's
residence was struck by lightning. Boonville firefighters answered an
automatic alarm at the Adirondack High School around 3:55 a.m., then ten
minutes later, an automatic alarm at the Headwaters Motor Lodge was
triggered, both caused by lightning, but there was no damage. Arnie and
Carol Miller of Boonville celebrate their 41st wedding anniversary
today. Anne Mooney of Boonville counts up 81 birthday candles with best
wishes from Ada and the rest of the family.
- TUESDAY, JULY 10: Happy 31st
anniversary wishes to Danny and Randa Ortlieb of Lowville from Daryl,
Amy and Daniel. Former TV Newsman David Brinkley was born in Wilmington,
NC in 1920 and died June, 11 2003 at 82. The Telstar, the first
satellite to relay live TV pictures across the Atlantic, was launched in
1962. It was the first privately owned satellite belonging to American
Telephone and Telegraph Company. A hit song named Telstar was
recorded by a British Quintet, The Tornados, and reached the top of the
Charts in early 1963.
- WEDNESDAY, JULY 11: Jerry and
Shirley Hutchins of Boonville celebrate their 46th anniversary with best
wishes from their family. 37th anniversary wishes go out to James and
Susan Wood of Port Leyden from their family. If you have outdoor flowers
and plants, be aware, I spotted some Japanese beetles yesterday. You may
want to put up your traps, but put them far away, so you don't attract
them to the area you want to protect. Even though it has been extremely
dry, it looks like a good blackberry crop this year. At our house, the
first blackcaps have ripened. In 1989, 1-1/2. diameter hailstones were
reported on the East Road in Boonville, with a 57 mph wind gust at the
Jackson Hill Weather Station.
- THURSDAY, JULY 12:
Congratulations to Greg and Susanna Krywosa on the birth yesterday of a
daughter, Francesca, born in Mamaraneck, NY in West Chester County. Jim
and Gilda Krywosa are the new grandparents. Also, Peter Krywosa of
Talcottville has to blow out 94 birthday candles today with best wishes
from his family. Earl and Mary Dunckel of Lowville celebrate their 38th
anniversary according to their good friends. The inventor of the Kodak
camera and film, George Eastman, was born in Waterville, NY in 1854.
- FRIDAY, JULY 13: Congratulations
to Adam and Tammy Poore of Lyons Falls on the birth this morning of a
daughter, Hailey Lynn, who will join two brothers at home. Best wishes
from Mom and Dad Poore. Dick and Joyce LeClar of Boonville will
celebrate their 44th anniversary today. Ed Roser of Ava observes his
80th birthday with wishes from Kevin and Jody for a great day. This week
we've received enough rain to jump start growth in our gardens and
flower beds. I measured .23. this morning and had a call from Bob
Griffith of Old Forge who collected 1.75.. The most rain collected this
morning in the past 30 years was 2.84. at the Jackson Hill Weather
Station in 1977. Today is Friday the 13th. Every year has at least one,
but no more than three. Any month that starts on a Sunday will have one.
