George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of July 7th, 2008:
- MONDAY, JULY 7: Happy 35th
wedding anniversary wishes to Marty Ischia of Lowville from wife Ellen.
He has been involved in the Music Department at Adirondack High School
for years, retiring this past year. Ellen said on their wedding day, as
they left St. Joseph’s Church, the school marching band was playing
outside. What a great memory. Also today, happy 29th wedding anniversary
wishes to Joanne Kelpy of Boonville from husband Denny, son Zackery and
daughter Kathleen. It was 51 years ago yesterday that the cannon in the
Little Village Park in Boonville was fired. Harley and Jean Gleasman’s
wedding reception was held at the Hulbert House, and Harley’s brothers
and friends somehow made the cannon fire in celebration. In car history,
Chrysler Corp. introduced a new car named Plymouth in 1928. The car sold
for $670 and 80,000 were built the first year. Construction work began
on the famous Hoover Dam in 1930. In the five years it took to complete
the work, 21,000 workers were employed, and today the dam is the second
highest in the country and the 18th highest in the world.
- TUESDAY, JULY 8: Congratulations
to Brian and Amy Andrews of Camden on the birth yesterday of a son,
Fischer Robert Andrews. The proud grandparents are Robert and Jerusha
Andrews of Boonville. Also, congratulations to Lance and Alisha Clemons
of New Bremen on the birth yesterday of a 12-pound, 14-ounce son, Ethan
Eric, with happy wishes from mom and dad, Eric and Patti. Mike and Rose
Williamson of Boonville celebrate their 52nd anniversary with best
wishes from family and friends. Ken Sliter of Boonville called to wish
his wife Joyce a happy 84th birthday from him and their family. One of
Boonville’s hottest temperatures was reached today in 1988 when 94
degrees was recorded at the Jackson Hill Weather Station. I clocked a
wind speed of 55 mph in Boonville in 1980. The gust split our plum tree
in the side yard in half during the 1 to 1:30 p.m. storm.
- WEDNESDAY, JULY 9:
Congratulations to mommy, Courtney Williams, from daddy, Richard Farr,
on the birth last evening of a son, Randy Lee Farr II. They reside in
Lewis County. He weighed in at 5 pounds, 3 ounces. Happy 25th
anniversary wishes to John and Sue Hennessey of Boonville from their
brother and sister Elks. Actor Tom Hanks was born in Concord,
California, in 1956. He is considered one of the biggest box office
draws alive. He has won Best Actor Oscars twice for the movie
“Philadelphia” in 1993 and for “Forest Gump” in 1994. He also has been
nominated for Best Actor numerous times in other films.
- THURSDAY, JULY 10: Dan and Randa
Ortlieb of Lowville will celebrate their 32nd anniversary, with happy
wishes from their children and grandchildren. The first privately owned
satellite named “Telstar” was launched today in 1962 and became the
first to relay live TV pictures across the Atlantic. A British quintet
recorded a hit instrumental song called “Telstar” that summer and was
the number one song for three weeks.
- FRIDAY, JULY 11: Happy 47th
anniversary wishes to Jerry and Shirley Hutchins of Boonville from
Linette, Junior, and family. Dave and Linda Evans of Beaver Falls
observe their 44th anniversary, with best wishes from Matt, Janet,
Cameron, and Allissa. I had a call to wish good luck to Carrie Rauscher,
Jill Ringwald, and Jolene Carey, as they will be participating in the
Boilermaker in Utica this Sunday.
