following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of July 3rd, 2006:
- MONDAY, JULY 3: Happy 56th
wedding anniversary wishes to Art and Marietta Wright of Lake Delta,
from their North Country friends. Albin and Sheila Rucki of Rome
celebrate their 41st anniversary, with best wishes from Dan and Florence
Hrim. Congratulations to Stephanie Quimby of Lowville for being named
1st runner-up in the Miss New York State Pageant in Watertown on
Saturday night. Best wishes from her fan club. Corvette collectors
celebrated yesterday, as the 1-millionth sports car rolled off the
assembly line in Bowling Green, Kentucky, in 1992. Lead singer of the
pop group, the "Doors," Jim Morrison, was found dead in a bathtub in
Paris in 1971. He was a native of Florida and died of a heart attack at
the age of 27. Actor Tom Cruise was born in Syracuse, NY, 44 years ago.
Cowboy-singer-actor Roy Rogers' famous horse Trigger died in 1965 at the
age of 33. Country singer Johnny Cash was discharged from the U.S. Air
Force in 1954.
- TUESDAY, JULY 4: Day off for the
holiday!
- WEDNESDAY, JULY 5: Happy birthday
today to Mary Markham of the Highmarket Road on her 84th year, from her
friends on the hill. In weather history, it was 35 degrees here at the
radio station in 1979, and Whiteface Mountain in the Adirondacks
measured 2 inches of snow, with snowflakes also reported in Watkins
Glen, NY. A rainstorm, similar to last week's, arrived July 3, 1999,
which resulted in Route 46, the Gorge Road, and from West Leyden to
Stokes, both closed due to washouts; 6 inches of rain was measured in
Westernville and 3.67 inches in Boonville. The new flagpole in the
Boonville Little Village Park was dedicated this evening in 2002. Elvis
Presley recorded his first hit song, "That's All Right Mama," at Sun
Records in Memphis in 1954. It was 60 years ago today that the first
bikini bathing suit was introduced to the public in Paris, France. The
skimpy two-piece suit was named after a U.S. Atomic Bomb blast off the
Bikini Atoll in the Pacific Ocean the previous week.
- THURSDAY, JULY 6: The largest
hailstone in U.S. history fell in Potter, Nebraska, in 1928, measuring
17 inches in circumference, 5-1/2 inches in diameter, and weighed 1-1/2
pounds. Early rock and roller, Bill Haley, was born in Highland Park,
Michigan, in 1925. He is best remembered for his hit song, "Rock Around
the Clock," in 1955. He died February 9, 1981, at the age of 55. Actor
Burt Ward, who played "Robin," Batman's sidekick on the TV series, was
born 60 years ago in Los Angeles, California. Singer-trumpeter Louis "Satchmo"
Armstrong died in his sleep in 1971. He was born in New Orleans in 1898.
President George Bush celebrates his 60th birthday today. Former
"Beatles" 15-year-old Paul McCartney and 16-year-old John Lennon met for
the first time at a church picnic in 1957 near Liverpool, England, later
to become two of the world's best-known songwriters as they wrote most
of the Beatles' biggest hits. Cowboy-singer-actor Roy Rogers died in
Apple Valley, California, at the age of 86.
- FRIDAY, JULY 7: Happy 80th
birthday wishes to Alice Everson of the Austin Road in Watson, from her
eight children and families. Former band director of Johnny Carson's
"Tonight Show," Doc Severinsen, was born in Arlington, Oregon, 79 years
ago. The "Beatles" drummer, Ringo Starr, was born in Liverpool, England,
66 years ago. A new car arrived on showroom floors in 1928, as the
Chrysler Corp. introduced the Plymouth. The car sold for $670 and 80,000
were built the first year.
