George's Tid Bits
by George Capron
The
following are excerpts from some of the calls that George received during
his radio show on WBRV-WLLG The Moose, as well as observations he made on
the air during the week of June 25th, 2007:
- MONDAY, JUNE 25: Congratulations
to Adam and Laura Youngs of Boonville on the birth yesterday of a
daughter, Kendall Marie. Best wishes from their families. Aaron and Leah
Beyel of West Leyden celebrate their 69th anniversary, with best wishes
from their family and friends. Bill and Leta Burns of New Hartford, who
spend their summers at camp in Woodgate, celebrate their 58th
anniversary, with best wishes from Wally, Debbie and Kayla. Stanley and
Norma Monnat of Castorland have been married 52 years. Happy anniversary
from their family. Graduation weekend was perfect here in the North
Country, but in Denver, Colorado, yesterday, a 100-degree temperature
was reached at 2:18 p.m., setting a new record for the day. In the past
week, two record highs were recorded and one record was tied.
- TUESDAY, JUNE 26: I received a
note to send out best wishes to Yvonne Spencer who retired yesterday
from the 4th floor Nursing Home at Lewis County General, from the
residents and staff. On this day in 1959, the St. Lawrence Seaway was
officially opened, creating a channel from the Atlantic Ocean to the
Great Lakes for a distance of 2,500 miles. In 1977, Elvis Presley sang
at his last concert in Indianapolis, Indiana. He was scheduled to appear
in Utica in early August. For the first time this year, the DEC and the
State Health Department issued a statewide air quality advisory for
today, warning of high levels of ozone, a major component of smog,
creating air pollution problems.
- WEDNESDAY, JUNE 27: Today, Harold
and Betty Tiffany of Old Glendale celebrate their 54th anniversary and
Harold’s birthday, with happy wishes from their family. I had a call
from Linda Glennan of West Leyden informing me that relatives in Germany
are paying $8 per gallon for gasoline, which makes our prices seem like
a bargain in comparison. The melody of song, “Happy Birthday to You,”
was written by a schoolteacher, Mildred Hill, in 1859, and her younger
sister, Patty, wrote the lyrics, which were first published in 1893.
Country singer Lorrie Morgan was born in Nashville, 48 years ago.
- THURSDAY, JUNE 28: Yesterday,
isolated thunderstorms brought little rain with the most measured at the
Merry Hill Weather Station with .33 inches, while in the village only
.08 inches was found. A bolt of lightning struck a stone wall near Bruce
Wheelock’s home on Route 12-D south of the radio station and started a
small grass fire. Last year brought heavy rains with a two-day total of
5.02 inches, creating downstate flooding and forced the closing of the
NYS Thruway from Schenectady to Syracuse. Sandy and Terry Newvine of
Port Leyden celebrate their 32nd anniversary today.
- FRIDAY, JUNE 29: Congratulations
to David and Brenda Gydesen of Glenfield on the birth of a son, David
Martin Gydesen Jr., born yesterday, with best wishes from their family.
Happy 61st anniversary wishes to Donald and Betty Hall of the
Taberg-Point Rock area, from their family. Percy and Irma Sullivan of
Port Leyden celebrate their 50th anniversary, and Dave and Mary Lyng of
Lowville also celebrate their 50th. It was 13 years ago today when I had
a heart attack and luckily survived it, and have had no problems since.
